Jerry Schad (also known as Gerald Schad, November 3, 1949 – Sept. 22, 2011) was an American educator and nonfiction writer, who had extensively documented local hiking trails in San Diego, Orange County and Southern California. His book Afoot & Afield San Diego County is widely considered the local bible of hiking. Jerry Schad Observatory was dedicated by San Diego Mesa College on the rooftop of the Math and Science building of the community college.

I am honored that Jerry Schad, this guide’s original author, entrusted his book to my care. The dean of Southern California guidebook authors, Professor Schad originated the Afoot & Afield series in 1986 and wrote 16 books in all, mostly about the outdoors. Those units, along with other public lands in San Diego County, are covered in Afoot & Afield San Diego County. For those interested in hikes in other parts of Southern California, the Afoot & Afield series also encompasses Los Angeles County and the Inland Empire.
