Ultimately, I found this book to be a disappointment. I think this is yet another case of overhyped-ness (yes, I'm considering that a word). Unfortunately I read the reviews that doted on the book. I was sooooo excited to read this and then I couldn't get past 15 pages without looking forward to see if the writing style stayed the same.

The main character speaks with a very heavy accent, which the author prints in the words. The main character is also the voice and the view point so the author chose to write the whole book in the way the main character speaks. It is very hard to read. The spelling mistakes were driving me f****g insane. I kept trying to correct it in my head which ruined the story. Couldn't get the atmosphere because I didn't know what the fudge monkeys was going on. Also the author chose not to use punctuation marks. No way to know who is talking because no quotation marks or commas or properly placed new paragraphs.

If you can get past all of the regular writing errors. Pretend that you are not used to proper editing and writing. If you can make it past that then you can read the story. Tell me how it is because I can't handle it. It literally gave me a headache.

For those saying you just have to "get used" to the writing style and eventually it will get easier, that's a pretty broad generalization. I teach English for a living and I wouldn't recommend this to my students or my friends because the language is so trying. I found I had to work to understand what was being said and that made me spend less time concentrating on the plot or characters. I was excited to read this because of its comparisons to other books I've enjoyed, but this wasn't good. To the person who reviewed the book and called the writing "poetic", I would strongly disagree with that assertion. I think about anyone with dyslexia or a learning difference trying to tackle this book and I just don't think it would be possible.

If a writer feels it necessary to write phonetically to convey the limited education and language of the characters, I think they're relying too much on structure and not enough on their own plot. The story is good enough on its own; it really doesn't need the complication of the language to add depth or understanding to the characters' struggle.

I can overlook the colloquial tone, which bothered some folks and does get trying after awhile, but that's why you download a sample first so you can see the writing style. What bothered me more were the flat characters (even the protagonist), lackluster romantic interest, and plot holes you could drive a truck through. How is the deaf kid talking in a post-apocalypse world? (We teach talking using computer technology to he deaf so they can visualize the sounds they can't hear.). Crows are about as smart as a human child, but even so a crow is not going to be able to understand that you want it to go back locate a passing acquaintance. It's unlikely that a bird would know that person's name...what, were introductions made? Also, If you travel for a certain number of days, and then send crow back to get reinforcements, then those reinforcements also have to travel said number of days (not to mention time spent locating them) to reach you. The timing was totally off for them to arrive in the nick of time (and yeah, you see that one coming a million miles away). It was at this point I just gave up, and usually I am pretty stubborn about finishing books that are meh. I just couldn't make myself care about any of these characters and it wasn't worth wading through the writing style to see where they ended up.

Moira Young, writing in very close third person voice, captures the unique voice of her protagonist, Saba. The reader intensely experiences Saba’s perceptions and feelings. She’s straight forward, doesn’t hold back about her faults or her strengths.The language in the book shows how much society has changed. For instance, people still the seconds between a lightning flash and hearing the thunder, “one Mississippi, two Mississippi…” The function of the words has stayed the same, but the spelling and/or meaning of them changed to “one Missus Ippi, two Missus Ippi, etc” indicating that formal titles (Mr. and Mrs.) have survived, but the concept of Mississippi as a river and state has long been lost.
Saba, the protagonist, has grown up in Silverlake, a dried up dust-bowl of a wasteland, scavenging the remnants of the “Wrecker” civilization. The deaths of her parents destroyed her once-happy family. When four horsemen capture her twin, Lugh, Saba embarks on a quest to rescue him while caring for her little sister as well. She’s caught up in a band of renegade female warriors, The Free Hawks, and leans that she is a skillful fighter and a touch opponent. Her loyalty to her twin and her lover, Jack, lead to a world redefining climax.
