If you'd like to learn how to create web services (in particular, using Apache Axis2) and make some sense of various standards like SOAP, WSDL, MTOM, WS-Addressing, WS-Security, WS-Policy, XML Encryption and XML Signature, then this book is for you. Why? First, it has a tutorial style that walks you through in a step-by-step manner. Second, it is concise. There is no lengthy, abstract description. Third, Many diagrams are used to show the flow of processing and high level concepts so that you get a whole picture of what's happening. The first 46 pages are freely available on www.agileskills2.org and you can judge it yourself.

This book is very much like the tutorial you wish you could write for your coworkers but just don't have the time to do so. The style is loose but to the point. There are typos and there are lots of statements such as "see it works" - the goal is to understand what just happened. So do not expect this book to go beyond showing you that it works. There are critics to this approach but sometimes you just want a piece of code that just works; just like when you google for an example; no theory just code with no theory attached.
By the end of chapter 2 you're already doing web services; albeit not very complex ones, but you are pretty much on your way.
In chapter 3 Kent takes a closer look at the environment; and this is the perfect time to do so because Web Services are remote beasts and you need a way to debug. At the same time the wizard idea of creating code from WSDL is cool but automation is needed. Kent takes care of that issue as well.
In chapter 4 the calling process is analyzed and TCP Monitor is introduced. This is a fun chapter. Short and sweet.
Chapter 5 gets serious again; multiple parameters are discussed. Pay attention to page 93. He mentions interoperability. Very important if you want those pesky .NET dudes to talk to your service(s).
Chapter 6 is one of the most complex ones. Touché for sure since it deals with complex data structures. One tip - edit the WSDL manually - don't use the wizard.
Chapter 7, 8 and 9 deal with sending binary files, invoking lengthy operations and signing and encrypting SOAP messages. Chapter 9 is not really all new knowledge but it is worth noting how to encrypt data in Web Services.
Chapter 10 - the best for last - Spring Framework. Though short the chapter points out how to use Spring in a web services environment. Spring is a vast topic and there are many ways to develop web services in Spring; so the book shows you an example.

Well, Kent, the second edition rocks.

This is an extremely practical book. Kent has done a good job demystifying the web service concept in simple terms. Specially he has done a great job explaining both server and client side development with axis and eclipse. Being an old school guy I'd preferred to see more cli based instructions but all in all he helped me understand how easy it was to use web service to expose business logic to external customers.

The book is good for the people who want to start building services right away with Axis2 Implementation. I read only few chapters before I switched to web logic services so this book didn't help much. But It definitely gives you all the screenshots to quickly use Axis2. There is a feature called Code Generator which can be used inside eclipse. Using this tool you can generate stubs skeletons etc using Axis2. I folllowed the step given in the book but couldn't install it or use it. Not sure who to blame.

My advice - Buy it if you want to build services usign Axis2 Quickly.

A lot of the books I've seen on web services are either too low level or too high level. This one was just about right. It presented just the facts you needed to know and explained why you would do this. Very concise and to the point.

I think this book is for people who wish to start with Axis2. This book is not about Axis2. There is more about two plug-in for eclipse. But for some people this book would be useful.

Before buying this book, I read some other books on web services. It seems that I understood the concept but there was still a big gap to put it in practice. This book comes to save.

This book contains detail steps and instruction to help you to understand the concept easily, but also guide you how to implement it. It likes a live tutor.

Beside, there are some other useful techniques in eclipse that other authors may assume that a reader already know, but in fact if a ready does not know, he/she might get stuck or take time to find some where else.

In addition, the author, Mr. Kent Tong, is a very help person. He enthusiastically guided me when I had questions.

I strongly recommend having this book if someone wants to learn and develop Axis 2 quickly, especially for the beginner with web services or Apache Axis 2.
