Previous work on parallel database systems has paid little attention to the interaction of asynchronous disk prefetching and processor parallelism.

Previous work on parallel database systems has paid little attention to the interaction of asynchronous disk prefetching and processor parallelism. Two heuristic methods are developed for the allocation of processors and memory to optimize either the speedup or the benefit/cost ratio of database scan operations.

Papers presented at HCW '94, held April 26, 1994, in conjunction with the Eighth International Parallel Processing Symposium. Following the opening presentation by Richard F. Freund entitled Smartnet Scheduling for Heterogeneous Computing, the 16 regular presentations are organized in three sessio.
