This is a case of a pretty good plot being sabotaged by lack of editing. I knew who the killer was by chapter 4, and there were a few places that were totally unrealistic (like Ella saying Troy was in the hospital having several operations on his arm, then wondering why he hadn't been to see her; blood spurting from a severe wound on Troy's arm, yet standing around doing nothing about it for an extended period of time; and after all the horrors experienced in the house, deciding to stay, etc.). But the most frustrating part was trying to wade through over 300 errors that could have been caught had the book been properly edited: missing words, misused words (for example: misusing wondering for wandering; eminent for imminent; confusing set and sat, setting and sitting; even using watched instead of washed--"...looked like it had been watched and dried"-- and there were more); punctuation errors; repeated words and phrases; overused expressions; and badly mangled verb tenses. As a rough first draft, it had the potential to be excellent. As a finished product, it left a lot to be desired. The writer definitely has talent, but needs to work on the technical skills of writing and avail herself of a good editor.

There was a lot of redundancy in this book. The same things happened over and over. Same fears kept surfacing. Same results again and again. From beginning to end, there was only 1 character that I liked throughout. I really don't know why I kept reading. I guess I was hoping for some miraculous improvement. I didn't get one. What really got to me was the editing. Phrases like, "I want you to you be happy" and "Amazing to finally to do something" were prolific. For me, errors like that break the storyline. There was one incident at the end that caught me completely off guard. I can usually guess what's going to happen next. This was a complete surprise. Because it was at the end of the book, it left me with a better feeling of the book as a whole. That's why I gave it a 2 star rating. Otherwise, it would be a 1 star.

I picked this up after reading her book, The Ninth Floor, and I must say, I really enjoyed it. I think the author must have updated the book because I did not notice the errors that some of the other reviewers mentioned, particularly the continuity errors. So I'm thinking that if you are interested in the book and the only thing causing you to hesitate is a concern about that, then I would dismiss it. (I'm not sure it is perfect, but it was close enough not to cause me to grimace about the editing.)

Enough about that. :) I'm a big fan of Barbara Michaels and Kay Hooper paranormal mysteries, so this was a very welcomed new find for me. The pace is very brisk and it moves swiftly. The heroine, Ella, is so tragically flawed and yet overcomes her problems, including alcoholism to try to discover who, or what, killed her husband. While I was not totally surprised at the ending, I was completely satisfied, enough so that I bought the next book in the series and am hoping that more Ella Reynolds books will be forthcoming. You really sink into Ella's head in a way that reminds me a great deal of Stephen King's writing, and I appreciate the deep insights. Ella is a difficult person and one that might have come off less likable if we hadn't been "let into her head" to such a an extent. As it was, I truly felt for her and rooted for her to find out the truth about what is going on in her house and what happened to her husband.

As main characters Ella and Danny have both lost all family members to death - they look forward to creating a large family of their own. Thus, they move from the big city of Chicago to Montgomery; a small community where Danny has inherited the family home - a huge beautiful Victorian. Ella immediately does not take well to the house. There is something weird going on there - only, SOMEHOW she is the only one who seems to notice. She sticks it out for her husband's sake. Until...the day she returns home from a book signing trip and finds her husband murdered. The ghostly activity increases but Ella is determined to stay until the killer is found.
Completely isolated for an entire year since her husband was found dead, Ella is 'coaxed into' a sort-of friendship with Grant - which opens her up to the idea of well...at least being on speaking terms with others. She enlists help from the officer (Gabriel) who is investigating the murder, of course - she having been the #1 suspect doesn't help but, she begins to trusts him. She LONGS to escape that house and write a book about her horrific experience. With Gabriel's help, she sets out to figure this out once and for all.

I was hooked from sentence one. The book was so exciting, intensifing more and more as the story went on. I couldn't keep this awesome whodunnit to myself! My poor husband was forced to talk the story out with me - I was REALLY focused on every single word for any clue as to whom or what the killer may be. We had so much fun trying to solve the mystery that I never really wanted it to end. Instead of dying to look ahead to find out the outcome as I sometimes do, I kept looking BACK for more clues, something I may have missed.

BRILLIANT story telling! I would assume that a mystery would be the most challenging genre to write. All of the baiting and hooking, changing the focus of each could-be suspect...lots of thinking ahead. I have to hand it to Liz Schulte, she wrote an AWESOME thriller! I went through every suspect, even considering that maybe it wasn't a real person haunting and killing after all. Totally fun, totally great - my new favorite thriller/ghost story!!

I have already lent my copy out to a friend & I can't WAIT to hear if she has enjoyed it as much as I had!

One distraction from the greatness of the book was the very poor grammatical editing. I'm assuming (hoping) that maybe there is a problem changing the book into ebook format? Because, if I had picked up a hard copy that read like this, I would have been appalled! Obviously spell check does not pick up on punctuation and grammar errors - please would someone read through these books and EDIT them before offering them to paying customers??? I realize the ebook is more inexpensive than a print copy, but - should that mean that we have to accept lesser quality?

GREAT book - but I feel it's a terrible shame for this talented author that her work was presented so badly. Still, I look forward to reading more by Liz Schulte. Dark Corners has gotten me hooked and I wouldn't miss out on any of her writing - errors or not!
