Evelyn Bridgett Patricia Ward-Thomas (3 July 1926 – 25 September 2018), better known by the pen name Evelyn Anthony, was a British writer. Anthony was born in the Lambeth district of London. She was born Evelyn Stephens to Henry and Elizabeth (née Sharkey). Her father had a fortune which came from the indelible ink invented by his grandfather Dr. Henry Stephens. She was a keen reader as a child and attended the Convent of the Sacred Heart school in Roehampton

This spy thriller from the Thatcher era toward the end of the Cold War features Davina Fleming, a British employee of the British security service. Davina when we meet her is resolutely single, if not spinsterish, and bitter about the way her much more beautiful sister stole her no-good boyfriend. As the book begins, Davina has been given the job of babysitting a senior KGB defector who is holed up in a safe house. Why she received this plumb assignment is not adequately explained.

The defector has the details of a devious Soviet plot to destabilize the Middle East and seize control of its oil supplies. But he won't cooperate until he knows that his wife and daughter, left back in the USSR are safe and can be brought to join him. Meanwhile, there are suspicions of a mole within the ranks of the British. Davina gets him to loosen up by taking him to spend a lovely weekend with her very British family in the countryside, the first of several totally unrealistic plot developments.

The book is well-written but lacks the realism and stage craft of John Le Carre or more recently the excellent thrillers by former CIA agent Jason Matthews which are really much more convincing. I never felt this author knew what it was actually like to be in a spy service -- what agents do and how they do it etc. Some of the plot contrivances struck me as frankly absurd. Would the British actually send someone like Davina to Russia to extract Soviet citizens when she has no field experience and speaks no Russian? She convinces her boss to send her on this unlikely mission to prove to the defector how hard they are trying to rescue his daughter. It doesn't seem real at all.

Having said that, this is an enjoyable read if you can suppress your skepticism. The politics seem very old-fashioned given the way the world is now but it has some historical vale as a time capsule from the 1980s. As stated, there are other works out there that are superior -- but this also has its strengths and is worth reading for those who enjoy Cold War espionage and intrigue.

Wow! Evelyn Anthony! Who knew? If recall bio correctly she wrote her first novel in 1949; yet the author's style and perceptions seem entirely modern. Her respect for the reader's intelligence in deftly indicating events and turns is highly refreshing. (No beating circumstances to death with maudlin reiteration.) An elegant, suspenseful mystery seasoned deliciously with romantic tension. So glad to have discovered Evelyn Anthony and will happily read more of her work.

This book is described as a "thriller" but it's more a well-written psychological novel containing vivid characterizations and acute perception of human foibles. I had never heard of this writer but will read more of her works. She deserves a wide audience. This book reminds me of those of such noted writers as Irwin Shaw and John O'Hara.

I relished the four books Ms Anthony wrote with Davina Graham as the main character. They are a great take on the cold-war spy genre. The Defector is the first in the series, followed by The Avenue of the Dead, The Albatross, and The Company of Saints.
Davina is in an administrative position with M5 and in the series moves up the ranks to led that organization.

The book are dated, of course, and the writing is excellent, and Ms Anthony can develops characters better than most other writers.

Davina Graham is about to be given the delicate task of debriefing a Soviet defector, Colonel Ivan Sasanov of Russian Security.

But soon Sasanov announces that he refuses to co-operate with the British lest his wife Fedya and his daughter Irina are brought from Russia to England, an operation which will prove to be far from easy to accomplish.

When the annexe at Halldale Manor burns down to the ground, Davina and Sasanov realise that the KGB is already after them.

A classic espionage thriller set in the cold war era which reminds us how quickly time passes...

I really enjoyed this book. I know the author has been around for some time but this is the first work of hers I have read. The plot was very good and she really took time to develop the characters. The book keeps a good steady pace throughout. If you are looking for an old cold war spy thriller then this will fit the bill.
