The Eagle Has Landed is a book by British writer Jack Higgins, set during World War II and first published in 1975. It was quickly adapted as a British film of the same name, directed by John Sturges and released in 1976. It starred Michael Caine, Donald Sutherland, Jenny Agutter, and Robert Duvall. The book makes use of the false document technique, and opens with Higgins describing his discovery of the concealed grave of thirteen German paratroopers in an English graveyard.

It's Jack Higgins, it's fun, it's maybe a little different to how I remember reading it when I was about 14, but then again I'm 33 now and I'm probably a little harder to impress as a reader. Still, with an exciting WW2 plot, likeable characters and good pacing, it's a real page turner. What I object to is the amount of typos that this e-book is awash with.

I’ve been in a mood for retro reads lately and revisiting books that I haven’t read in decades. “The Eagle Has Landed” came out in 1975 and in it Jack Higgins tells the story of a plot to kidnap Winston Churchill from a remote coastal British estate. The plot inspired is by the real life daring raid SS-Major Otto Skorzeny pulled off to liberate Mussolino from a mountain top prison after he was toppled from power.

The story focuses on a group of paratroopers lead by LtCol Kurt Steiner. The fallschirmjagers are assigned to a penal unit on the English Channel island of Aldeney condemned to ride modified torpedoes attacking allied shipping in the Channel, the fatality rate is predictably high. Steiner and his men are Nazis with hearts of gold (a theme that Higgins returns to in future books) and intervened with an SS unit deporting Jews to death camps setting a little girl free. After their court martial they receive a veritable death sentence staffing “Operation Swordfish” driving the aforementioned torpedoes. The off books operation is backed by the nefarious SS-Reichsfuhrer Heinrich Himmler and Steiner and his troops are granted an opportunity for redemption by masquerading as Polish airborne soldiers, parachuting into England and grabbing up Churchill.

Helping them is a traitorous widow with her own axe to grind operating as an undercover Nazi agent and a former IRA soldier, Liam Devlin who has his own reasons for seeing England suffer. There’s also a group of 90 American Rangers training in the area as well just to keep things interesting.

The prolific Higgins is masterful at weaving an intricate tale pulling numerous plot points together and keeping the suspense building to the very end. Steiner is a charismatic character, half American – half German, a Knight’s Cross (with Oak Leaves) holder who is a professional with a strong moral compass. It’s this sense of duty that gets his men in trouble when one of them saves two children in the village from drowning but in the process reveals their identity as German airborne commandos. Soon the paras are fighting for their lives and their mission is in jeopardy; I won’t reveal how things work out but the book holds up well after 43 years and is highly recommended.

I've heard of this title, of course for many years and was aware of the movie as well, but had never ventured either until this was offered as an Amazon Prime read.
It is a well constructed WWII military ry thriller with a completely plausible story. The detail and character development are first rate. The names and places from war history will lend An abundance of credibility. Very enjoyable.
If you haven't seen the movie, read this first. The movie although well done, doesn't delve deeply enough into the nuances of the characters.

I have recently read a few top ranked novels written in the 1970's and 1980's and enjoyed them all - this is one of the best. It was first published in 1975 and sold 50 million copies across the world. It was also a successful movie, starring Michael Caine, Donald Sutherland, and Robert Duval and achieved a bit of a cult following.

Normally WWII stories are mostly about the Allies - but this one centres on the Germans at a time when it is clear to most that they are losing the war. It also focusses on how a small quiet remote English community reacts when the war is unexpectedly brought to their doorstep.

During one of his temper tantrum brainstorms, Hitler challenges Admiral Canaris (his espionage chief) to capture Winston Churchill. While Canaris tries to forget the challenge, he asks one of his staff to plan a commando raid when he finds that Churchill will be spending a weekend in remote part of Norfolk, very near the coast. Heirich Himmler never forgets and takes over the planning in his normal ruthless and chilling way.

The raiding group is led by a charismatic Lt. Col. Kurt Steiner, the son of a German general and his American wife, and a small group of war hardened but disgraced paratroopers. They are helped by a key IRA operative Liam Devlin and long term local resident but undercover Abwehr agent Joanna Grey.

While the raid starts according to plan it rapidly goes downhill - surprisingly partly because of the humanity of a German soldier who saves a local child from drowning. The normally heartless Devlin is vulnerable when he loses his heart to a local teenager.

Some say that this is Jack Higgins' best book and is in the same league as the classic Frederick Forsyth thriller "The Day of the Jackal". I agree with them.

All others are judged by this story. Story? Listed as fiction, yet leaves you wondering if the overall premise couldn't be true? That the Nazi's made a failed kidnap attempt at some point on Churchill, perhaps even at the time described in the book? The book seems to ring true, doesn't it?

Beyond that, it moves at such a brisk pace, and you find yourself transported back to the era to stand on the edge and observe the drama as it unfolds. Higgins creates such a feeling of reality and presence you feel like taking cover when the bullets fly!

This is one of those rare books where the protagonists of the story are people, who in real life, you would be strongly rooting against. But, you find yourself almost rooting for them in the confines of the novel. The main characters are comprised of a group of German soldiers and an IRA member who are working to try to kidnap or kill Winston Churchill during WWII. I just could never quite get into this book, probably because of the aforementioned ambiguity.

Great book. Jack Higgins is an awesome writer. His novels peak your interest from the beginning. If a book does not peak my interest within the first 30 minutes of reading I won't finish it. This one however grabs your attention right away and keeps it. It is a page turner, you won't want to put it down.
