Dragonriders of Pern is a science fiction series written primarily by American-Irish author Anne McCaffrey, who initiated it in 1967. Beginning in 2003, her middle child Todd McCaffrey has written Pern novels, both solo and jointly with Anne. The series (as of July 2012) comprises 23 novels and several short stories. Most of the short fiction has been collected in two volumes or incorporated in one of the novels, so Dragonriders of Pern is sometimes identified with the 24 books.

Dragonflight by Anne McCaffrey was unfortunately plain unenjoyable. The setting is the least intriguing one I have been faced with in quite a long time. I was surprised to find that the first book in the Dragonriders of Pern series actually does have a good story, with interesting characters and an excellent invented world.

Humans and their flying dragon companions live in fear of thread, a caustic, deadly material that falls sporadically from space. But when the thread doesn’t fall for a long time, people become complacent, forgetting that it is the brave dragonriders who can save them from the periodic threat. But when the thread falls, human and dragon heroes must fight the scourge

Dragonquest: Dragonriders of Pern. Narrated by: Dick Hill. The Pern series is very engaging. Having only recently discovered downloadable audio books, I have also only recently discovered a love of science fiction

Dragonquest: Dragonriders of Pern. Length: 12 hrs and 12 mins. Having only recently discovered downloadable audio books, I have also only recently discovered a love of science fiction. Like all series, it has it's high and low points, and sometimes the narrator grates a nerve with his accents, but I chewed through the series so fast I had some 'splaining to do when the bill came.

On the beautiful planet Pern, colonized for centuries, Land Holders and Craftsmen have traditionally tithed food and supplies to the dragonweyrs to which they are bound. In times past, the mighty telepathic dragons and their riders were the only protection from the dreaded, life-threatening Thread. But it has been over 400 years since the last Threadfall, and some people have come to doubt that the menace will every strike again. But F'lar, rider of Pern's greatest bronze dragon, has no such illusions. The Red Star is near; Thread will fall soon.
