He also wrote several original screenplays including Breakheart Pass and conceived an adventure drama for television entitled The Hostage Towers. I read this book years ago in paper-back, and was delighted when Harper Collins UK re-released all MacLean's books in Kindle format. It's still a great, improbable, Bond-like adventure. I've always appreciated MacLean's ability as a story-teller/writer; his descriptive vocabulary (who else could describe the hero as a scofflaw?); and his ability to follow the story-line without unnecessary detours.

However, this book (the first I've reread) is very poorly formatted, with run-on sentences & paragraphs, significant typos, and missing/incorrect punctuation throughout. It wasn't fun to read because of these. I don't believe anyone proof-read this text before it's release.I did submit the errors via Kindle, but I paid to read this book, not to edit it! It only cost $1.99 + tax, but I'm sorry I spent that much.

Suspenseful, intricate yarn from the master storyteller...marred yet again by terrible editing by HarperCollins. Typos and OCR errors abound along with some formatting glitches. Glad I was able to pick this up at the "sales" price of only $4.99. If independent, self-published authors can turn out ebooks with few or no typos and related errors for $1.99 or less, how come a giant publisher like HarperCollins can't do the same? Now that Mr. MacLean's books are almost all available in ebook form, it would be great to add every volume to my Kindle - but with the quality that H-C is providing, and at premium prices - I'm hesitant to continue. The four stars are for the novel as written by Mr. MacLean. If this review was based just on the quality of the ebook itself, it would be a 1 star review.

Some minor inconsistencies here and there, probably due to Mr. MacLean being English. But a fun read with some twists and turns. The book also spawned a rarely decent film.

Xcorn

This is an unusual setting for Alistair MacLean to use. I haven't read a "good western" for many years but this is a very good story. The many twists and turns in this story keep one riveted to the book from the very first line to the last. As with most Alistair MacLean books, I would only recommend this one if you have the time to read it because you won't be able to put it down once you start it.

Well developed characters good plot and book moves along just like all of The author’s books. I am not usually a fan of westerns but liked this one a lot.
