You can read Tim Hallinan’s latest novel, The Fear Artist, as a standalone. Can. But why are earth would you want to? The other books in the Poke Rafferty series are such a delight that you’d have to be whacky not to read them. Oh it’s a true Page Turner, be still my heart! Let me say this first: I love Philip Poke Rafferty. He’s just your typical American expat living in Bangkok, married to a former prostitute (Rose) with a young daughter adopted off the streets when she was 7 (Miaow). Nothing too out of the ordinary, right?

Nidor

Poke is lucky in love, but not very lucky in other ways. While he’s carrying some paint cans to his apartment, demonstrators rush by and a man falls on top of Poke, shot and bleeding. Just before he dies, the man utters a few cryptic words. Thanks to that, Poke becomes a wanted man, of interest to the American secret service, the Thai secret police, and Murphy — a monster who should be a war criminal but isn’t.

After Poke sends off his family to safety, he’s on the run, and working around the clock to stay alive. The story bristles with intrigue. Betrayal is in the air. The characters include some very colorful spooks, as well as Poke’s beautiful young half-sister who’s been well trained in survival tactics by Poke’s slippery father.

Fueling the plot is a history of atrocities by certain Americans in Vietnam — Murphy being the stand-out in cruelty and craziness. I had trouble getting through the torture scenes, but I suppose they had to be there.

The subplots are particularly engaging — poke’s cop friend Arthit finally falling in love after his wife’s death; his adopted daughter Miaow getting romantically involved with a poignant teenage nerd.

Bangkok continues to be a fascinating mix of holiness and hedonism. Poke’s disastrous personal life is mirrored by the disastrous flooding threatening the city.

As usual I feel compelled to read on in the series to see what will happen next to my favorite characters.

Kajishakar

Tim Hallinan is a superb writer whose strength is characters and setting. In The Fear Artist we get plenty of both. The setting is Bangkok and it's flooding. Since this happened only 9 months ago in real life it was a nice surprise to see Tim blend that into the background and story given that he must have started the book before the flood began.

The characters are plentiful and vivid. The villain being Murphy, doing his villainy best to cover up previous atrocities in another time by committing more atrocities in real time. Hallinan's bad guys are top-notch. The protagonist in this series is Poke Rafferty, a travel writer with an inexplicable ability to attract trouble and protect himself and others from same.

This is the fifth in the Poke Rafferty series. Poke's family is largely absent this time around. His wife, Rose and daughter, Miaw have been sent up country, leaving Poke to go it alone, making him more similar to others and less unique than I found him to be in The Queen of Patpong. He is visited by his half-sister, Ming Li, she of 17 years old going on 30. Ming Li was fine but I missed the nuclear family settings found in Queen of Patpong during the long periods of time Poke was on the lamb in Fear Artist.

There was one plot point involving Poke's father, Frank that shook me out of the comfort of my suspended disbelief. I'm nit-picking but I felt like I'd been hit over the head with a two by four at the time.

Murphy's daughter, Treasure and the images of her at Murphy's house are worth the read alone. Captivating. Haunting. And I almost forgot ... Janos. Janos is an otherwise forgettable character that Hallinan brings alive for all his forgettable qualities. It is the type of bonus coverage one has come to expect from Hallinan.

I'm giving this one 4 and 1/2 stars, which I normally would round up. But unlike some of the reviewers here who felt The Fear Artist is Hallinan's best in the series, I still give the nod to Queen of Patpong, which is a runaway 5 star thriller and less predictable. If you like thrillers and you like fun, read Tim Hallinan.

Timothy Hallinan rocked my world with The Fear Artist. I don't understand why he is not as famed and praised as Lee Child, Robert Crais, Michael Connelly, and the other big names writing thrillers.

The Fear Artist features a trio of very fresh, totally real-and-rounded lead characters, facing off against a real-world yet very chilling villainess. Hallinan's prose hits harder than anyone I read. He has single-handedly turned me into an evangelistic fan of books written in present tense. He made Bangkok vividly alive in my mind's eye, and I've never been there.

This novel delivers on all the things I really care about: non-cliched characters in a colorful, exciting world, living through a hair-raising yet very plausible plot. You simply can't ask more from a thriller than that. Well, actually, you can: this is one of a quartet of novels about the same characters, each one equally good. If you're new to TImothy Hallinan, brace yourself for gritty bliss.

Beydar

Another good story in the Poke Rafferty series. Great characters and a fine zig-zagging plot. In "The Fear Artist", Bangkok-based travel writer and occasional sleuth Rafferty, is witness to a street murder that drags him into a complex conspiracy with elements of contemporary Thai politics, Blackwaterlike mercenaries and Muslim extremism. For most of the book, Rafferty is separated from his wife and daughter, but partners with one of his regular Thai buddies to survive attempts to eliminate him as a potential spoiler to secret service operation orbiting around an ex-CIA renegade and current American expat. The latter is the central villain of the story and a serious piece of work he is. At the same time, this opponent has some dimension to his character, being "tragic" in the classic sense of the word.

Overall, this crime novel has virtually everything going for it and fans of the series (and Hallinan's other books) will not be disappointed.

Hadadel

I have read all of the Poke Rafferty books. And re-read them. And re-read them again. I won't say that this is great literature, but I will say that these characters are worth your time. They comprise a bruised but hopeful family and friends coping with (OK I agree -- a bit of a stretch) serious national and international crimes. Anyway: I am looking forward to the next in the series.
