Two comparisons with her Gamache books stand out: Here are two rare authors whose characters can muse – sometimes for a few pages at a clip - about their relationships to the natural and civilized worlds and hold both your attention and your heart with the honesty and depth of feeling portrayed.

A police officer is shot dead . I listened to the audiobook is wonderfully narrated by Simon Vance. Whenever I feel like I need a faster paced police procedural with well fleshed out characters and a wonderful sense of place I turn to the Benny Griessel books by Deon Meyer.

Narrated by: Simon Vance. Length: 10 hrs and 44 mins. Still, Seven Days is a terrific book narrated by the best narrator I've found. I've already listened to it twice, and I'm sure I'll return to it again in the future. There's no better crime writer on the scene today.

My purpose here is simply to relate my very favorable reactions to this author’s books and how I think I came to them. The school of book reviewing that focuses on discussion of plot lines and characters portrayed is one I dropped out of long ago. I am now on my fourth Deon Meyer book and only with difficulty did I tear myself away to write this review. The three I have finished are Trackers, Thirteen Hours and Seven Days. There was no order in mind as I bought them. Each book so far has fitted neatly into either police procedural genre or the broad spy/thriller category. But Amazon lists for sale over 15,000 of the former type and 267,000 of the latter. So far, for my money, Deon Meyer ranks in the top 1% of the top 1% in both categories. Whatever differences separate the three I’ve finished so far, they all rate 5+ stars in both quality and pleasure afforded; they earn my strongest positive recommendation.

About thirty pages into to each of these books, I said to myself, “I haven’t read anything of this type so good in at least a year, not since the last one by …xyz”. And for each Meyer title a different favorite author came to mind. Meyer vies with Lee Child in creating vivid characters of simple, direct interest and gut-wrenching moral force and clarity. And for Child only Jack Reacher reaches this Olympian level; I can think of four such vibrant characters in my first three Meyer books, and any of them could (and I hope will) support a long-running series. The second author Meyer brought to mind is Michael Connelly and his Bosch books. The plotting in both men’s books is intricate but water-tight, with action tightly linked to characterization and details never flashy or implausible. The third writer Meyer’s books have evoked for me is Louise Penny. Two comparisons with her Gamache books stand out: Here are two rare authors whose characters can muse – sometimes for a few pages at a clip -- about their relationships to the natural and civilized worlds and hold both your attention and your heart with the honesty and depth of feeling portrayed. Second, both Penny and Meyer often write sentences so elegantly beautiful in both construction and sentiment that one delights in rereading them immediately. (The work of Meyer’s translators and editors seems impeccable, but there seems and even deeper and more satisfying achievement in the original conception of what has been constructed into sentences and paragraphs.)

To put my opinion of these four “top” authors already mentioned in context: Donna Leon’s Guido Brunetti, Daniel Silva’s Gabriel Allon and Robert Crais’ Joe Pike head series that are, in my estimation, just a shade or two behind Penny, Child, Meyer and Connelly. Jonathan Kellerman and Alex Berenson are constants on my bookshelf and very good, but a distinct notch below the seven writers mentioned earlier.

To the Kindle edition publisher(s): The lack of extra space or rule-lines to signify when the author is switching time or character-focus detracts a lot from the clarity of the text. I presume the hard copy editions have such; it would seem the investment of a mere few hours to resolve this.

misery

Another solid entry in the series. As always, he does a good job of winding the tension machine up and letting it play out amongst various plot threads, with the usual mix of solid insights and writing.

If you enjoyed his other novels you will enjoy this one. Not perfect, not quite as over the top as the climax of 13 hours - which is good - but not quite as tense either ... Both realistic and mundane and almost a letdown when the all too human answers come spilling out at the end.

The Xandra relationship works well in the details as two alcoholics struggle together, but seem off in a few other ways as a policeman dates his singing idol in ways that don't quite resonate.

But still solid.

Unnis

Another very good book by Deon Meyer in the Bennie Greissel series. An attractive young woman has been found murdered in an expensive flat in Cape Town. The investigation has cooled due to lack of evidence and suspects but then there is a threatening email that a cop will be shot every day until the killer of the young woman is arrested. It is this threat and subsequent incidents that provide the tension and urgency for the story. And it is somewhat reminiscent of the killers who shot random victims over a period of weeks in the Washington, DC region a few years back. Having lived through that experience as a resident of McLean Virginia I would have to say that "Seven Days" does not create the same level of emotion as the DC experience for obvious reasons, but also because in DC the victims were from the population at large, e.g. people shot while pumping gas, and most were fatalities. In "Seven Days" there is a nice back story involving Alex, Bennie's gf who also has a drinking problem (can this relationship work? anybody see "Days of Wine and Roses"?). What really resonated with me is how Bennie suddenly feels overwhelmed by all the new technologies and apps that everyone except him seems to know and use. Despite all the goodies here, I just didn't enjoy this story (perhaps too much detail of financial partnerships)as much as I have DM books and found it was very easy to put down after short periods. And for those of you still having nightmares as a result of an earlier Meyer book, rest assured that there are no loose black mambas in the room in this one.

Bedy

I had read only one previous Deon Meyer detective Griessel book which I enjoyed, but Seven Days is outstanding. Well-written, fully drawn characters with depth, taut dialogue and sprinkled with wry humor. I did not want it to end. Deon Meyer has now joined Lawrence Block as my favorite authors specializing in recovering alcoholic cops.

Landarn

Meyer's character development, plotting, and descriptive prose are second to none....one of my favorite writers. Only four stars because I was simply more enamored with the first two in the series, and it got a little more bogged down with Incomprehensible (to me) South African bureaucracy,so it drops to only a really good read.

Pemand

Fast moving and full of suspense. The main characters problems do not overshadow the story but gives a break in the story line. Very enjoyable read and really getting to know the main character and what he is going through.

I really like Deon Meyer's books. I'm reading them in order and my local library didn't have this in their collection either physical or electronic. This book came in very good condition.

Detective Benny Griessel is back to solve another murder. This being Deon Meyer, the plot has an extra layer of complexity. We are exposed to a Cape Town tourists rarely see, a police force dealing (& not dealing) with transformation & the deal-making that has come about as a result of Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) policies.
The picture of a society struggling with its necessary transition is a seamless part of the story & will resonate after the final page.
