The novels are everything to Fowles. He has lived vicariously through them. You are every character you write. In Daniel Martin, where I describe myself travelling all over America, I probably revealed more of myself than anywhere else. Daniel is a grownup Nicholas Urfe. They are both changed by women. And so was I. There has been a succession of her predecessors.

Having read and enjoyed Committing Journalism, I really looked forward to reading Martin's fiction, and was not at all disappointed. His characters are vivid, real and detailed - and whether likable or not, you feel like you know them. But most of the characters ARE likeable - foilbles and flaws and all. The plot was a little silly - everything tied up too neatly in a bow at the end but what the heck, the author deserves to write about a little happiness after his years away. Looking forward to reading In the Hat next. An absorbing and appealing novel. Published by Thriftbooks

Daniel Torday’s distinctly current novel Boomer1 focuses on characters who like some of my friends are trying and failing to find success in traditional American ventures in the new millenium. Torday switches the point of view between three main characters. Torday’s novel speaks directly to a certain audience; the music and cultural references that are nostalgic, but not overly sentimental. While the novel may have a slow start, the narrative hits its stride after a couple chapters, and the last hundred pages hold some of the best writing I’ve read all year.
