The book's protagonist, Claudia Rose, is a consulting handwriting analyst who is retained to determine whether a famous Hollywood publicist committed suicide or was murdered. The dead woman had OD'd and was found in a Jacuzzi with a suicide note nearby. Her business partner wants Claudia to analyze the note to find out if it was genuine or a forgery. That premise by itself might not sustain a short story, let alone a novel, but Lowe just uses it as the hook to get Claudia looking into the death.

Sheila Lowe is a British-born novelist and graphologist who has lived in the United States since 1964. Her second book was released a year later. She is currently the president of the American Handwriting Analysis Foundation.

Poison Pen
Let me just say at the outset that I would not only recommend it but already have, that I liked it, and that I liked it enough as a free selection to go right into shopping mode on my Kindle and buy the next two books in the series and I haven’t paid for a Kindle book since 2013 and never directly from my Kindle.
That said, I usually offer my standings list at the end of a review, but this book contains so many of the aspects that most readers find offensive upon so much as their slightest mention that I thought I’d put the Standings in first. If you’re interested enough to know why I’d still recommend Poison Pen…read on.
(1) Zero paranormal/supernatural/magic components;
(2) Some profanity;
(3) Slight romance but not gooey;
(4) No explicit sex;
(5) Violence but not heavily detailed or gory;
(6) Some mild mention of child pornography;
(7) Some mild mention of beastiality;
(8) No alternative lifestyle agenda or promotion, but it is mentioned prominent topic
(10) Grammar and punctuation police, come ahead on: I know you'll find something.
Flawed? Certainly. But none of the flaws I might mention were sufficient to encourage me to abandon a good story. The one- and two-star reviewers who objected to the subject matter have a point and while I think we all condemn most or a lot of the deviant penchants that play a part in this plot, still and all they're just part of a fictional character's lifestyle and valid in that they contribute to character development.
It’s a hard thing to recommend a book that contains #6 and #7 on my standings list while reassuring readers of this review that I did not find them to be offensive. I think it’s important to remember first and foremost that just because they might have a valid purpose in a work of fiction certainly doesn’t mean one condones those activities in real life or that exploring those aspects in detail even in fiction is enjoyable or something that the average reader without those natural leanings would actively seek out. But if there is such a way to present them tactfully and without being gratuitous, if it’s possible to make those proclivities and events temporarily tolerable for the sake of the story, then Ms. Lowe succeeded admirably, at least in my opinion.

I liked this book quite a bit. All I ask of a mystery is that it moves forward with some suspense, teaches me a few things that I don't know, and has a main character who is moral and smart and driven towards some objective in life. Right? I don't mind if there are other people in the book who are engaged in weird sex, as long as it doesn't seem like the author is getting off on it (you know?). This book wasn't like that. In real life, there are plenty of perverts, so I have no problem with real life being in a mystery novel, if it is done right. I'd rather have that than a lot of stupid scenes where nothing is happening, or it doesn't mean anything. The flow of the story worked well, and the writing was nice...well done.. I thought perhaps the main character's boyfriend could have been developed a little more, but maybe that happens in the next book, which I am going to purchase. These sorts of books are my down-time entertainment. Many of them suck. This one didn't. Thanks.

I picked up this novel because I was intrigued by the book's central premise. I wondered whether an author could write a mystery novel that keeps the reader's interest for 300 or more pages based on a main character who occupied a highly specialized niche in the crime solving universe-- a forensic handwriting expert. The answer, I'm happy to say, is an emphatic "Yes," and that's exactly what Sheila Lowe has done in Poison Pen.

The book's protagonist, Claudia Rose, is a consulting handwriting analyst who is retained to determine whether a famous Hollywood publicist committed suicide or was murdered. The dead woman had OD'd and was found in a Jacuzzi with a suicide note nearby. Her business partner wants Claudia to analyze the note to find out if it was genuine or a forgery.

That premise by itself might not sustain a short story, let alone a novel, but Lowe just uses it as the hook to get Claudia looking into the death. Claudia has a strong interest in the case since the dead woman was a former college friend from whom she had been estranged for years. As she investigates, the case rapidly turns more bizarre, since, in addition to publicity, the victim helped procure some very kinky erotic services for her clients, and there's any number of rich and powerful people who don't want their dirty secrets revealed.

Claudia herself proves rather adept at finding out information about people, and she and Lowe take the opportunity to discuss some interesting tidbits about handwriting analysis which complement but do not bog down the story line. Plus, there's a budding romance here as Claudia and the cop investigating the case get very chummy. This is Lowe's first novel, and her inexperience shows in a couple of places. The ending of the book is a bit forced, as Claudia commits the cardinal amateur detective sin of allowing herself to go off alone with a prime suspect in the case, and the description of some of the action scenes is a bit hard to follow.

All in all, however, this is a breezy, fast paced, red blooded romp on the wild side, and most assuredly not an endless handwriting analysis dissertation. Claudia Rose is a fun lady to spend time with, and Sheila Lowe knows how to keep the readers entertained.
