The Ice House (1992) is the first crime novel by English writer Minette Walters. The story was the recipient of a John Creasey award for best debut. Mrs Phoebe Maybury, a widow in her late thirties, lives in Streech Grange with her two companions Diana and Anne. One day her servant Fred finds a rotting corpse in their ice house, a storage room inside a hillock that hasn't been used for years.

Minette Walters is a bestselling crime writer. She has won the CWA John Creasey Award for best first crime novel, the Edgar Allan Poe Award for best crime novel published in America and two CWA Gold Daggers for Fox Evil and The Scolds Bridle. Had I not vaguely remembered that The Ice House was her debut novel, I'd have been startled

I read several Minette Walters books while on holiday and found them very well written. I found them very powerful and slightly different to the normal style of Mystery Crime writers. Had I not vaguely remembered that The Ice House was her debut novel, I'd have been startled. The writing's quite often pretty clumsy, the narrative seems a bit disjointed as if the book had been written piecemeal I've read several of Walters's later novels and for the most part enjoyed them a great deal.

The book was well written in a succinct, descriptive manner which emphasized the characters' varied demeanor and voices as well as the environs of the story. What I wanted more of was the storyline of Phoebe and her two children, particularly after David disappeared. There is so much to know about their existence, hardships and treatment within the home and community. There is much more to know about the relationship of Anne, Diana, and Phoebe beyond the perceptions.
What I did learn was a great deal about Mr. and Mrs. Thompson which was complex and colorful. I also learned a good bit about DS McLoughlin's life. But I wanted more about DI Walsh and the rationale for his actions.
I guess it is good when an author leaves the reader wanting more. But if the book promotes being about the story of three women living together then an author needs to provide as much depth as possible to the story. For me, the focus was off in the book but still an enjoyable read.

We'll written with interesting, troubled characters and a dense, compelling plot. An old unsolved murder is resurrected along with a rotting corpse in a small rural town. The chief of police who has a lasting hatred for his prime suspect of 10 years earlier whose body was never found then, is certain that this is the husband's body. His next in command a good detective with an alcohol and marital problem is likewise antagonistic and suspicious of the female household which is now running a flourishing landscaping business. In fact the entire town -with a few exceptions- has nothing good to say about the 3 lesbians. So, lots to sort through, new trails to follow with better detective work, old bigoted views to be held no longer, and young lives to look forward to a brighter future. Much is revealed and life now will hold promise and happiness. I had read it and loved it when the book came out, and it definitely holds up over time.

Ostracized by the community in which they live, these three women become larger than life in the minds of the local townsfolk. The charming and artistic Diana Goode and the earthy, no nonsense Anne Catrell hunker about their housemate, Phoebe Maybury, as the events of the past threaten to crop up again and overwhelm her.

The police, led by Chief Inspector Walsh, a man with his own underlying agenda, seem intent upon putting the screws to these three women, fixating upon Phoebe. Only Sergeant Detective McLoughlin seems to be genuinely interested in discovering the truth. In order to do so, however, he must confront his own personal demons, as he finds himself drawn into a snare of deceit, good intentions gone awry, loyalty, and a secret that threatens to ruin the lives of three women.

The author cleverly uses the discovery of the corpse as a catalyst for a voyage of self-discovery for some of her characters. Brimming with a cornucopia of subplots and one or two red herrings, the author grips the reader with a literate and compelling narrative. She is a welcome addition to the ever growing list of British mystery novelists. This author's work should appeal to those who enjoy mysteries written by Ruth Rendell.
