There have been a series of shocking murders that have terrorized the villagers near the Abbey of Finbarr; three young girls have been violently slaughtered - one per month of the night of the full moon, the most recent only days before during the badger's moon, October's full moon. The villagers are angrily demanding answers from the abbey, who are housing three visitors from faraway--strangers who the villagers believe are behind the gruesome murders. As a respected Brehon, Fidelma, along with her companion Brother Eadulf, is dispatched by her brother the king to restore order to the panicked village and investigate the killings. But time is running out and Fidelma must act quickly, uncovering the complicated truth before the next full moon comes and the lunatic killer strikes again.

I wish the characters would be more likable. The Alpha in the story is clearly Fidelma, often angry, impatient, constantly demanding respect and unable to deal with criticism without having a temper tantrum, Her husband is the Beta, doing everything she orders him to do, always being nice to her, even when she tells him just how stupid he is in her eyes. Everyone else is naive, slow-witted, ugly in appearance and has something to hide. She is not welcome where she goes and she doesn't care, since she only cares about the law. Of course, they all are just fascinated with how brilliant Fidelma is and everyone tells her that she has a really sharp mind... and a great memory... and a very keen eye...

One of the best in the Sister Fidelma series. Fidelma and Eadulf have hit a bump in their marriage. Fidelma is facing post partum depression since the birth of her son who has been kidnapped, and Eadulf has begun to feel as a second class outsider in the kingdom of Cashel. He is a Sqxon and Fidelma is an Irish princess sister of the king. There are religious differences between him and Fidelma, since one follows the old Irish Church and one accepts the Church of Rome. There are also the usual political problems. Since the series is set in the 8th century, and the author is a Celtic scholar, the setting is authentic and historically interesting. The marriage between Fidelma and Eadulf brings out the differences in their social classes as well as Fidelma's legal status in the society of Cashel. If you enjoy historical mysteries a la Brother Cadfael, but with the fascinating background of the Middle Ages, this one's for you.

This book skips forward about 9 months from the last. Fidelma is feeling confined by her new role and so leaps at the chance to solve a mystery for a chieftain cousin. They find three teenage girls grisly murdered. As usual more is going on. Strange happenings come together confusing the puzzle.

Being new to audio books, I was very surprised to see the entire, unabridged book transferred so beautifully to audio. Carol Lennon narrates beautifully. Highly recommend.

Three mysteries solved by Fidelma but, this time, with the help of Eudulf. I enjoyed reading about Eudulf taking the initiative in the investigation. The book was a page turner and stayed up most of the night until I finished.

I read this a while ago and cannot remember it very well. It is one of the Sister Fidelma Mystery series. They are all excellent. This one has some information about pre-Christian beliefs, and there is an old Druid who is quite a character. He looks like a suspect but others distorted his teachings for their own evil ends. For once, Fidelma was fooled for a long time, but she always figures it out in the end.

Thank the author for including how to pronounce Irish names. It took me a while to get them but it was getting the names. I love o learn and this book added more information of how the people lived in the 600's.

Having read all of Peter Tremayne's Sister Fidlema mystery series, it would seem to be more appropriate to review the entire set of these mysteries rather than one of the mysteries in isolation. Peter Tremayne is well known for his expertise in Celtic history, and it is this knowledge imparted in his Sister Fidelma mysteries which kept me reading all of these stories. In each of his Sister Fidelma mysteries, he provides an introduction describing seventh century Ireland, the background of the Irish-Roman Catholic dispute of this period, and an explanation of the source for his current mystery. Most of these mysteries include an introduction to Gaelic pronunciation and the cast of characters in the mystery to help readers keep track of who they are and their role in the story. A map of seventh century Ireland also allows readers to identify where the story mystery occurs.
Tremayne's writing style provides clear descriptions of the time and settings and allow his readers to draw their own mental pictures of each character and his/her personality. Each mystery is fast paced and entices the reader to continue to read until the mystery has been solved. Vocabulary is clear, colorful, varied yet does not require a dictionary for understanding. A good sense of humor and unexpected twists and turns in events and character roles challenge the readers of Tremayne's Sister Fidelma mysteries as they attempt to discover the solutions before she does.
Although each of Tremayne's plots is unique, all are written to be read individually or as part of a sequential series. To provide background for individual characters or events, Tremayne unfortunately uses the same phrases and descriptions over and over, causing the reader to become bored or to laugh at the "here he goes again" repetitions. Since these repetitions in the Sister Fidelma short stories can become tedious, and since general plot development tends to follow similar development, some readers may not read the entire series.
For the individual who enjoys a reading a rapid paced mystery full of interesting historical tidbits for fun and relaxation, Tremayne's Sister Fidelma mysteries will be delightful reading.
