To the loyal, (and thus careless) fan this initially appears to be a compendium of short stories by Michael Connnely. WRONG! It's a writer's version of speed dating.

Murder in Vegas book. In Fort Lauderdale he wrote about police and crime during the height of the murder and violence wave that rolled over South Florida during the so-called cocaine wars. In 1986, he and two other reporters spent several months interviewing survivors of a major airline crash. They wrote a magazine story on the crash and the survivors which was later short-listed for the Pulitzer Prize for feature writing.

I learned that Las Vegas was named by Spanish settlers and means, The Meadows.
Most of the 23 stories suffered from abstract, unceremonious endings. Any good publisher will tell you that short-story books never do well on the market—I fear this one won’t either. I give the book an overall rating of 2 out of a possible 5. You may not want to waste your time.

Normally it takes me one or two days to read a book. Usually a novel from Michael Connelly takes less time. This particular book took me more than three weeks and at times I was tempted to not finish it. Thankfully it was comprised of numerous short stories that were easier to get through. I gave this book three stars because some of the stories were okay; none were great; and some were down right terrible. Thankfully these stories were supposedly edited by Connelly and he was not the author. If Michael Connelly would have authored these short stories I would have been sorely disappointed.

To the loyal, (and thus careless) fan this initially appears to be a compendium of short stories by Michael Connnely. WRONG!

It's a writer's version of speed dating. Give a bunch of writers a subject, a very short deadline, and tell them to finish with an O. Henry twist. The first story accomplishes that. The rest are over-written, self-conscious and the O. Henry twist at the end is about as original or charming as the sixth time a giggling brat sits on a whoopy cushion.

Some riveting, some just ok, one or two quite memorable. Good quick reads of great variety. The lure of Las Vegas from the start was Sin City, in all its-7-deadly forms...and all represented here.

Collection of Vegas related stories very entertaining and fast moving. Various authors with a spread of ideas and experiences in and around Sin City. Some really good ones.

James Swain, first up in this anthology, hit the mark. Quintessential Vegas. The other stories could just as well have been written by my dog. Rarely do I give up on a book. First time for everything.

Silly Dog

Again, another book by Connelly that you wonder why he did it! Like "Switchblade", it seems to money to be nothing but money grubbing. In fairness to Connelly he published this as a grouping of short stories, but come on: at least have some that have substance to the writing. I read 5 or 6 of the stories and quit, wondering why he lent his name to this.

I'm a big fan of Michael Connelly's writing; however, this collection of shot stories, edited by Connelly, isn't quite up to his standard. Maybe a couple of the stories weren't bad, but most were lackluster and left me wondering why I wasted my time reading them. If I wasn't so compulsive about finishing things I start, I wouldn't have read the whole book.
