THE RAGMAN’S MEMORY was one of those books less driven by a single large influence (such as the topic of sexual assault for Fruits of the Poisonous Tree) and more by both personal interests of mine and events which were topical in Brattleboro at the time. It is a hodge-podge, therefore-not in the telling, thank goodness-but certainly in its architecture.

The Ragman's Memory book. Generally, I like the Joe Gunther mysteries, but this one was a bit weak. But the story, overall was predictable-ie, power, corruption, money, etc. Not the best in the series for sure.

Archer Mayor's mystery The Ragman's Memory was a real page-turner for me. Set in the frozen, rural northland of Brattleboro, Vermont (not too different from Potsdam, New York, where I make my home), Mayor tells how Police Lt. Joe Gunther tracks down a series of seemingly-unrelated crimes, the first clue for which is a snatch of purple-dyed human hair plaited into a bird's nest. I recommend this book, especially for northern winter evenings spent reading. This has to be one of Mr. Mayor's best ! Published by Thriftbooks. com User, 22 years ago.

Before turning his hand to fiction, Mayor wrote history books, the most notable of which, Southern Timberman: The Legacy of William Buchanan, concerned the lumber and oil business in Louisiana from the 1870s to the 1970s. This book was published in 1988 and very well received; it was republished as a trade paperback in 2009.
