So if you're a believer, and sensitive to those who don't, it's best to steer clear as you won't appreciate some passages in the book.

Each book Nevada Barr is a mystery fiction author, known for her "Anna Pigeon" series of mysteries, set in National Parks in the United States. Barr has won an Agatha Award for best first novel for Track of the Cat. Barr was named after the state of her birth. She grew up in Johnstonville, California. She finished college at the University of California, Irvine. Originally, Barr started to pursue a career in theatre, but decided to be a park ranger. In 1984 she published her first novel, Bittersweet, a bleak lesbian historical novel set in the days of the Western frontier.

Unselfconscious as a bird, she whistled, lending human notes to the sweet cacophony of the woods. Annotation. Nevada Barr's Track of the Cat, is the first book in her Anna Pidgeon series. I'll read on a couple of more books in the series and hope for the best. Set against the arid backdrop of the Guadaloupe Mountains in West Texas, Track of the Cat follows park Ranger Anna Pidgeon as she tries to unravel a murder plot.

Cordalas

Hunting and football separates man from monkey. So says Ms. Barr, with Texas on her mind. She doesn't like Texas.
This outdoors crime novel/adventure story/bi-sexual flirtation tale is as anti Texan as they come. Heroine park ranger Anna Pigeon likes the murder suspect, a mountain lion, much better than the local humans. A colleague has been found dead in the park. Killed by a cougar? The law enforcement professionals think so. Pigeon doesn't. Too many facts of the case suggest murder by a biped. When she persists in her doubts, the non-lion tries to put her down next...
Sort of a Peter Matthiesen wildlife novel for feminists.

There is much to like about this first novel in a series. The 'detective', Anna Pigeon, is interesting and unusual. The setting of the case, Guadalupe Mountains, is interesting and unusual. Barr can write. The social encounters between Pigeon and the rest of humanity are mostly plausible and interesting. Her self-observations in the process of her amateurish investigations help raise the book above most of the mystery genre.

What comes in the way of a wholehearted five star 'yay' is the fact that the whodunnit genre forces an artificial structure on the book. One should stop reading these novels after 2/3 of the text. Who did it is usually the least interesting question. Barr is not particularly good at tying the loose ends and keeping suspense up during the process. She compensates by an ample supply of gore and blood.

Yadon

This is the first in the Anna Pigeon mystery series. A quick but great read. All the elements you look for in a mystery: appealing and well fleshed out characters, interesting but not distracting back stories, good pacing, clues galore (most of which you'll get after the fact if you're like me), and an ending you can't see coming (at least I couldn't). I ordered the second book in the series in hopes it will prove as entertaining as this one.

P.S. As you might gather from the online reviews of Nevada Barr, if you checked them out, this series is not for born-again Christians. I have no idea what Nevada Barr's personal spiritual beliefs may be, but her character, Anna Pigeon, does not believe in god and makes no bones about it. So if you're a believer, and sensitive to those who don't, it's best to steer clear as you won't appreciate some passages in the book. Be forewarned, don't buy the book, and please don't smear the book in reviews simply because you object to the character's belief system. It's a novel, not a religious text.

Conjukus

I enjoyed this book. It is the first book of the Anna Pigeon books. We enjoy visiting National Parks and a friend suggested this author, Nevada Barr, since all the Anna Pigeon books take place in National Parks. You learn a bit about the park and enjoy a murder mystery at the same time. I finished the book in one day.

Cesar

A mountain lion is wrongly accused of murder in a Southwestern national park, and Anna Pigeon is a park ranger who sets out to prove who really did it. Great scenery and nature writing - very little humor (except for some banter with her Manhattan-dwelling sister). No more violence than is necessary to carry the story (but graphic descriptions of what wild creatures do to dead bodies in the wilderness). The best suspense scene involves Pigeon alone in a fall down a mountain slope to the edge of a precipice. Mild sex (M-F and F-F). There is political agenda ( females and tree-huggers are good guys, ranchers and hunters are bad guys, Christians are silly) but I didn't find it too intrusive. The final showdown action scene with the murderer was unconvincing, but these scenes almost always are.

Quinthy

Anna Pigeon takes us on a tour of the highest mountains in Texas.and quite an adventure at the same time. I especially loved the love she has for animals, and there is a particularly poignant part showing the care some Rangers have for them. A great read.

Sardleem

Fun idea: girl detective is a ranger trying to save a few mountain lions. Set in a national park! Not so many characters as often found in murder mysteries so possible to see the outcome. Subtle clues. Slow periods, too slow. Intense struggles, too. Easy, fun read.

Ygglune

Love Nevada Barr's novels of National Park Service Ranger Anna Pigeon. This is the first of the Anna Pigeon series, and is a gift to our 18-year old grandchild who loves the out-of-doors. My wife and I really appreciate Barr's smooth and descriptive writing style and her bits of life-experience wisdom scattered throughout.

A friend told me to try Nevada Barr's books, so this is my first & won't be my last. I'm amazed at what an excellent writer she is. I'm fully enjoying it. Her descriptions of the canyons and desert nature are spectacular - I almost feel like I'm seeing it with her & her description of characters & the way she pulls the murder mystery into it is really good. I'm just happy to have found another really good mystery writer.
