Islam is the largest and the state religion of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. About 97% of Pakistanis are Muslims. Pakistan has the second largest number of Muslims in the world after Indonesia. The majority are Sunni (80%) while Shias make up between 15–20% and Ahmadis (considered by the constitution of Pakistan to be non-Muslims) are 1%.

Many scattered articles, too, have appeared from time to time, dealing with various aspects of Islam in India, but nowhere is there to be found any comprehensive treatment of Indian Islam from the standpoint of religious history. It is with the greatest diffidence, therefore, that this book has been attempted.
