A Song of Stone is a novel by Scottish writer Iain Banks, published in 1997. Abel and Morgan, an aristocratic couple, live in a small castle in an indeterminate place and time of civil war. They decide to abandon their home and join a trek of refugees seeking safety. A group of irregulars, led by a woman called "The Lieutenant" (or "Loot"), stops them and takes them back to the castle, which the irregulars fortify as a base. They loot the castle, and Morgan is seduced by the Lieutenant.

My father was a king and the son of kings. HE was a short man, as most of us were, and built like a bull, all shoulders. He married my mother when she was fourteen and sworn by the priestess to be fruitful. It was a good match: she was an only child, and her father’s fortune would go to her husband. He did not find out until the wedding that she was simple. Her father had been scrupulous about keeping her veiled until the ceremony, and my father had humored him. If she was ugly, there were always slave girls and serving boys. When at last they pulled off the veil, they say my mother smiled.

In The Last Stone, he returns to write its ending. Over months of intense questioning and extensive investigation of Welch’s sprawling, sinister Appalachian clan, five skilled detectives learned to sift truth from determined lies. Bowden displays his tenacity as a reporter in his meticulous documentation of the case. But in the story of an unimaginably horrific crime, it’s the detectives’ unwavering determination to bring Welch to justice that offers a glimmer of hope on a long, dark journey.

I stumbled upon the Book of Songs in a James Michener library in PA. It was an incredible experience for reading and learning song structure, like varying similar stanzas and repeating verses. It was my introduction to Chinese literature also. There are no cliches though. The love songs are stamped with the mark of real love affairs and experiences. The book is probably PG rated, mostly G rated. The Book of Songs is essential reading for anyone who wants to understand the possibilities and breadth of poetry.
