I had read this years ago but forgot the story. Now I'm glad I re-read it; Joey Hendricks and Cole McKinney both were the forgotten children of different parents but now as adults they are successful. Joey as an assistant to the Governor of Texas then Cole as a Sergeant in the Texas Rangers. They must work together to solve a current murder as well as one that happened 16 yrs ago. Cole has to now deal with his step brothers, Lucas & Sloane McKinney and their father Jim (who is a suspect) who aren't happy about it. They also are Texas Rangers investigating the current murder. Joey also has to re live a past she wants to forget; her mother was a mistress to Jim but her father Leland also had other women. Throw in the attraction Cole & Joey feel but don't want to get hurt and their dysfunctional families you have a suspenseful, murder mystery with a surprise ending with multiple twists. This final book in a series about three Texaqs Rangers brothers was the best.

Cole McKinney is summoned to Justice, Texas by his half brothers to help investigate a murder that is connected to one 16 years ago. His tracking abilities were what they needed. Cole had never met his half brothers. He was the result of an affair their father had and his father had never contacted him. Their meeting was tenuous but Cole kept it professional. In his mind, if their "father" was guilty of the murders, he would be arrested like anyone else.

Joey Hendricks arrives into Justice at the same time as Cole as a representative from the governor's office. Her job was to investigate the situation that had gotten out of control with those investigating now being targeted by the killer.

From the moment Cole and Joey run into each other (almost literally since Cole almost runs her over with his Harley), the attractions and sparks fly. Cole feels abandoned by the man who fathered him. Joey feels abandoned by her parents throughout her life with her mom drinking and popping pills and her father tearing the family apart and marrying someone else.

I figured out who the killer was in the second book, though it was quite the adventure watching Cole and Joey working together to figure it out. Numerous family secrets from both sides came to light along the way along with a number of attempts on their lives. I also suspected the outcome of Joey's brother whod' been kidnapped and presumed dead 16 years earlier. It was a sweet spot in their story.

Cole grows fond of Joey while protecting her (and keeping an eye on her for suspiciaous activity in the investigation) and doesn't feel comfortable with his feelings. He'd bed women over the years with no attachment. He pushed aside thoughts of being like his father (who was reputed as having numerous affairs). No feelings meant good sex. Though the sex with Joey was hot and heavy, she couldn't detach herself from it either.

This was the best book by far. Cole's bad boy personna and Joey's tough yet vulnerable personality were a mixture that was explosive.

The only part of the series I just couldn't buy into was how ALL involved in the investigation shouldn't have been within a ten mile radius of it. The 3 heroes (Zane, Sloan and Cole) were the sons of the prime suspect of the murder 16 years ago and a suspect to the recent murder (their father). Anna (in the first book) was also related to the situation. Carley (2nd book) though the sheriff of Justice, had been a key witness in the 16 year old murder. And Joey was the daughter of the other prime suspects in the recent murder. They definitely shouldn't have been leading the investigation. The conflict of interest should have made any arrests questionable.

This was a Great book. It had action, Romance and suspense. It could be read as a stand alone, but it's better to read Trace Evidence in Tarrant County first then read this one. Trace Evidence left a lot of unanswered questions. Justice for a Ranger was an Awesome follow up book. I loved Joey and Cole in this book. The story had lots of twist and turns, and I have to say I never saw the outcome coming...

Panic shot through Joey as the car skidded into the tree and fire burst from the hood. The air bag trapped her, and she was hanging upside down between it and the seat. The scent of smoke and gas permeated the air, raising her fear another notch. Her chest ached from the impact of the bag, and her arm from being thrown against the door, but she was alive. Next to her, Cole grunted ans swiped at the air bag. "Joey, are you all right?" "Yeah. You?" Yes. But we have to get out of here fast. The cars going to blow any second. "I Know." She jiggled her seat belt trying to free it. " Cole, my seat belt is stuck!"

This is the third and best of this series. A little confusing with all the characters both living and dead. But it settles down into a good read.

I haven't read too many of Rita Herron's books but those I have read have been excellent.
will read more of hers.

Very good book. Have to try the next one. It started out a little slow but turned out to be great.
