About 50 pages of "Get Published!" are devoted to an excellent overview of the economics of the publishing business and the role of the various players: authors, agents, acquisitions editors, trade publishers, small presses, self-publishers, distributors, wholesalers, and retailers. Readers will learn why it's so difficult to sell a manuscript to a major trade publisher, the steps in getting a book published, the odds of getting shelf space in a retail bookstore, the reasons that books are returnable, and in what situations print-on-demand printing may be a good choice. For authors new to the publishing business, this industry overview is worth the $9.95 cover price. Also included are some tips on writing manuscripts, researching competitive books, and marketing your book.

"Get Published!" was written by the president and the editorial director of print-on-demand publisher iUniverse, and both authors have many years of experience in traditional publishing. Unfortunately, more than half of the book is a blatant sales pitch for iUniverse. However, if you are considering subsidy publishing, "Get Published!" is a good introduction to the world of "supported publishing" and the services of iUniverse. It would be a useful starting point for comparing the services of various subsidy publishers. And, when you hold this book in your hands, you can judge for yourself the quality of printing and binding available with modern print-on-demand technology.

Susan Driscoll and Diane Gedymin are no strangers to the world of traditional publishing. Each of them spent years in the trenches of publishing and working in various roles. Now they are leaders at iUniverse. It should surprise no one that GET PUBLISHED! leads the reader to use the services of iUniverse.

What amazed me about this book and why I'm recommending it is the frank discussion about what it takes to get a book published in today's environment. With excellence it guides the reader through the questions about how to set goals and achieve them. It teaches how to analyze the competition then carefully explains traditional publishing, small presses and self-publishing. This book is loaded with current statistics and information for any writer--beginning or seasoned professional.

Yes, the book includes the iUniverse editorial guide and pushes readers in the direction of iUniverse--yet equally and probably more important is the education for the reader. As a book acquisitions editor and an author of more than 60 books (all through traditional publishers), I recommend this book as a valuable how-to addition for anyone interested in book publishing.

I'm glad to see that Susan Driscoll is now taking her lead from PublishAmerica. Almost a year ago today, PublishAmerica CEO Willem Meiners's "How To Upset a Goliath Book Biz: PublishAmerica: The Inside Story of an Underdog with a Bite" was published. That book was a laughable attempt to counteract the bad publicity PublishAmerica had been getting in a series of stories in major periodicals such as the Washington Post.

Now Driscoll, together with Diane Gedymin, editorial director of iUniverse, have published a book extolling the virtues of using iUniverse. Despite the title, their book is not a guide to getting published through a reputable trade publisher. It is not an introduction to the subject of writing and publishing. For $9.95, you get a sales tool promoting iUniverse's services put between covers. You lucky dog! You can already get the content contained in this book for free on iUniverse's web site.

Driscoll and Gedymin will sell more than a few copies of their book thanks its generic title, which will show up in Amazon and Google searches ("how can I get published?"), as well as the intentionally vague bullet points on the book's product page, which only once mention that this is a guide to using iUniverse without also mentioning that iUniverse is a subsidy publisher.

Although some of the information is useful, you can get most from searching on-line for self-publishing.

The biggest drawback of the book is it is primarily a sales pitch for using the iUniverse self-publishing company. It only lists the services for themselves and never mentions other self-publishing options. The full page Washington Post advertisement said:

the authors guide you through the alternatives, but the only alternative is use their publishing company.

Without doubt -- between online bookstores, print-on-demand publishing, the economics of traditional publishing -- the publishing world has changed forever and Ms. Driscoll and Gedymin have provided a provocative guide to this brave new world. They lay out the pros and cons of the three main paths to market: traditional publishing, indepedent self publishing and supported self publishing. Each of the alternatives is thoroughly and objectively examined, giving authors a much-needed primer on the world they face AFTER they finish their manuscript. Most of all, Gedymin and Driscoll provide hope and inspiration for thousands of talented authors who are caught in the endless rut of querying and submissions.

This book is helpful if you are planning to self-publish your book via the iUniverse print-on-demand services. Everything you need to know about iUniverse publishing services is in this book. But if you are planning to submit your manuscript to agents and traditional publishers, this book will not help you.

The book was full of good information but you need to remember, it was written about the publisher who published the book. The book was "selling" the publisher.
