Waterfront revitalization plays a key role in the current 'marketing strategies' of numerous British cities. In two empirical case studies, two fundamentally different approaches to waterfront revitalization are assessed with a view to their local labour market effects. The first case study (Manchester/Salford) gives an example of a planning approach which is more concerned with image-improvement in general, whilst the second study (Hull) represents an approach aiming at direct local economic spin-offs.
