Having gone through a number of competing entry level textbooks, this one gets my highest recommendation as it takes you through the steps with just the right amount of grammar to give you a good understanding of the concepts.

The dialogues use a contemporary and lively language, they are memorable, and throughout the text the key concepts are reinforced so that learning is almost painless, if that is the "mot juste".

I also have "The New Penguin Russian Course", the "Routledge Colloquial Russian", and Living Language's Russian. In comparison, the Berlitz text is your quickest introduction to the language. Where others fall short, Essential Russian has a lot of useful expressions and situational dialogue, which is designed to give you a lot more confidence when you're put to the test of actually using the language.

I teach Russian immigrants the English language for my church. I had each of my 20 students buy this for our course manual. It provides a basic vocabulary, uses both languages so translation is not necessary, and is a fun book because a little humor creeps in periodically.

Found this book much too condensed. The first two chapters go along nice and easy but, from the third on, you are just swamped with grammar (even though it is well presented). For example, the 5th chapter gives you all in one shot the tables for the declension of all personal pronouns AND masculine, feminine, and neuter nouns in all six cases, this along with the past tense of verbs!!! Much to much. For all that grammar there are only two pages of exercises! There should be at least twenty pages of exercises for chapter 5. Actually the cases should be taken individually along with each gender and with lots of practice, as Russian is a highly inflected language which requires using the cases alot in order to learn them. The dialogues aren't too bad. Almost nothing is really shown on how to hand-write the letters, so how are you going to practice? The review lessons are only a repeat of the dialogues already presented = useless. This book is OK for someone who has already finished a basic coure and wants to review. If you are a beginner don't buy it now; you will be thoroughly discouraged.
