Paul Robert Magocsi, FRSC, is professor of history and political science and holds the chair of Ukrainian Studies at the University of Toronto. The book not only presents the maps of Eastern Europe from its earliest times (400 AD), to the present, but also, accompanying each map is a detailed write-up of the history, geography and governments present at the time the map indicates.
This atlas gives exactly what it promises: The history of the lands between the German and Italian-speaking peoples in the West and the boundaries of the former Soviet Union in the East - in short: "East Central Europe". Not to be mistaken with "Eastern Europe", which can exactly be defined by the European area of the former Soviet Union, or Russia, Belorussia and Ukraine of today. Paul Robert Magocsi (born January 26, 1945 in Englewood, New Jersey) is an American professor of history, political science, and Chair of Ukrainian Studies at the University of Toronto. He has been with the university since 1980, and became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in 1996. He currently acts as Honorary Chairman of the World Congress of Rusyns, and has authored many books on Rusyn history.
The Historical Atlas of Central Europe covers the area from Poland, Lithuania, and the eastern part of Germany to Greece and western Turkey and extends in time from the early fifth century to the present.
