Basil Barrington Watson was a Jamaican painter. There is something heroic about Barrington Watson's commitment to the painting of Jamaica and it's people. He painted for posterity

Basil Barrington Watson was a Jamaican painter. He painted for posterity. In the vein of French salon painters such as Eugene Delacroix or Cabin Al, he documented the culture's history; it's myths and fantasies. He subsequently also acted as a visiting Professor at Spelman College in Atlanta. Barrington chaired the Bank of Jamaica art collection in the mid-1970s and operated several art galleries: Gallery Barrington, which has existed in several incarnations since 1974, and the Contemporary Art Centre, which was active from 1985 to 1998.

All of this could easily cause one to miss what is really important about his life and work. He voiced these strongly held beliefs in his paintings and his book The Pan-Africanists (2000). His artistic work will endure because of its quality and, more importantly, his message.
