Kevin L. Nadal is Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice where he also serves as the Deputy Director of the Forensic Mental Health Counseling graduate program.

Filipino Americans are the second largest Asian American/ Pacific Islander population in the United States and they are projected to become the largest Asian American population by 2010. With 1.37 million Filipino-born immigrants living in the US, Filipino Americans are the second largest immigrant population in the country. As descendants of the Philippines, a country that was colonized by Spain for over three centuries and by the US for nearly 50 years, Filipino Americans are an ethnic group with a sociocultural and historical experience that is unlike any other. First, they are the only ethnic group that has been categorized as Asian American, Pacific Islander, and Hispanic. However, California state laws require that all personnel surveys or statistical tabulations classify persons of Filipino ancestry as "Filipino" rather than part of any other racial or ethnic group. Additionally, Filipino Americans have often been referred to as the "Forgotten Asian Americans," because their presence has been invisible in psychology, education, humanities, and other social sciences. Filipino American Psychology: A Handbook of Theory, Research, and Clinical Practice offers a comprehensive look at the psyche of Filipino Americans. By examining history, cultural values, influences of colonialism, community dynamics, and intersections with other identities, the reader will have an opportunity to understand essential information about this population. Students will gain knowledge and awareness about Filipino American identity and personality development, while practitioners will learn culturally-competent techniques to become better counselors, clinicians, and educators. This book is the first of its kind and aims to promote visibility of this invisible group, so that 2.4 million Filipino Americans will have their voices heard.

I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in the detailing the idiosyncrasies of Filipino Americans. Although it is an empirically based book, it was written in an engaging, easy to read and digest manner. This is truly a masterpiece!

I've read a number of works on the Philippines, on Filipino Folkways, etc. I have even read The Survival Guide to the Philippines (still a favorite). This text is absolutely brilliant. It is not perfect-- as a work that has no real peer -- but it does a fantastic job of revealing (albeit topically) the complexity of what it means to be a Filipino American in today's America. Nadal examines, and makes note of, areas that are too often lazily blended with the broad Asia-Pacific American paintbrush (i.e, LGBT, biracial children, etc). Moreover, Nadal is not afraid to reveal when "the baby is ugly," revealing the persistence of sexist mores in the "tribu." Maraming Salamat po, indeed.

Filipino American Psychology: A Handbook of Theory, Research, and Clinical Practice

I was fortunate enough to read the author's book, "Filipino American Psychology: A Handbook of Theory, Research, and Clinical Practice" prior to its public release. While reading I was enthralled by the amount of the issues my culture, my family, and myself deals with that are examined in the book.
I was amazed at the different theories i.e. identity issues dealing Filipino vs. Filipino American, generational gaps, religious, and persistent culture tendencies. All of the theories are supported by credible resoudrces. I was excited reading this because many of the cultural behavior mentioned in the book makes me proud of where I came from but sad because who it can effect my people.
Kevin did a fantastic job writing this reference. It takes a glimpse of the Filipino American boy or girl, man or woman, struggling to live both worlds. I strongly recommend this book to any professor or student in counseling, in a Filipino community, and in the world of psychology.
