I have read a handful of books twice, but this is the only book I've read three times. The Onion Field, originally published in 1973, is a classic true crime book. It is the story of the murder of LA police officer Ian Campbell by a pair of small time losers, Gregory Powell and Jimmy Smith. Campbell's partner Karl Hettinger helplessly witnessed the murder and managed to escape a similar fate.

Several of his first novels were set in Los Angeles, California, and its surroundings, and featured Los Angeles police officers as protagonists. He has been nominated for 4 Edgar Awards (winning 3), and was named a Grand Master by the Mystery Writers of America.

Joseph Wambaugh, a former LAPD detective sergeant (1960-1974), is the bestselling author of twenty-one prior works of fiction and nonfiction, including The Choirboys and The Onion Field. Wambaugh joined the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) in 1960. He served 14 years, rising to detective sergeant. He also attended California State University, Los Angeles, where he earned Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees. In 2004, he was named Grand Master by the Mystery Writers of America. He lives in southern California.

Turn your goddamn lights on! That's it, take it easy, turn onto the freeway there at the on-ramp. Where the hell're you going, Jim?". Where the hell're you going, Jim?" his chin. What's the matter with you?". I should wear my glasses. Well turn around and go back. Get on the freeway and go to the Long Beach sign.

The Onion Field is a top shelf book. It's the in-depth analysis of the true story of a 1963 event in Los Angeles. Two cops pull over two crooks in an otherwise routine traffic stop. But the desperate crooks get the drop on the cops, get their guns, kidnap them, drive them out to an onion field in the countryside, and murder one of them

Hollywood. Saturday night. A broken taillight leads to a routine traffic stop. It shouldn’t have changed the lives of the four men involved, but it did. The Onion Field is the frighteningly true story of a fatal collision of destinies that would lead two young cops and two young robbers to a deserted field on the outskirts of Los Angeles, towards a bizarre execution and its terrible aftermath. "A distinguished 'factual novel.'A fascinating account of a double tragedy: one physical, the other psychological."-Truman Capote
