If I hadn't already read some other books first, I would have missed the importance of a lot of the details given (and, in fact, Phillipps may not have understood some of those key connections)

I'm spoiled by the more appealing layout of newer non-fiction books; this book has an old-fashioned appearance and the pictures are almost all black and white drawings. For the anthropological stu The information is good in this book, but it's almost like lists rather than interesting, readable material.

Maori Life and Custom by . Phillipps was born in Oamaru and served for New Zealand during World War One before beginning his life-long career into the study of Maori life and custom when he joined Wellington's Dominion Museum in 1917. He became the Musuem Ethnologist in 1944 and then Deputy Director, publishing works such as Maori Houses and Food Stores (1952), Carved Maori Houses (1955) and Maori Carving Illustrated, which is still in print. Phillipps retired in 1958 and died in 1967.
