Adventures in Wonderland: Decade of Club Culture. My 1998 book about British clubbing, based on my own experiences and on hundreds of interviews with DJs, promoters, musicians, fashion designers and clubbers. The book traces the roots of the music in Chicago, New York, Detroit and Ibiza; the frantic, E-fuelled summers of 88 and 89 in London, Manchester and beyond; the huge illegal raves in southern England and in Blackburn; and the subsequent rise of the superclub.

This work charts the rise of house music from its roots in the underground, black, gay scene in Chicago. It discusses how the "rave" scene has changed the face of youth culture, and addresses the issues of drugs and commercialization. Quite a good exercise in nostalgia if you were there, and the book covers the evolution of the music pretty well but I found the book very London centric. 0747258465 (ISBN13: 9780747258469). It did cover the whole Manchester thing but a lot of other significant parties happened including the protests against the criminal justice bill. Also, not a lot about Sasha and way to much emphasis on Oakenfold which exemplifies how London centric this book is. Also the end was rather negative and concentrated on how the drugs ruined it.

Tracing a history that takes in the Stonewall riots of 1969, New York's gay clubs, the advent of disco (much reviled at the time), and the genesis of House in Chicago and Techno in Detroit, through to the British Northern Soul scene, Ibiza, and the vast illegal raves that terrified and appalled little England, Sheryl Garratt's Adventures In Wonderland is a.

Early in the book the authors make an effort to distance themselves from Abba and the Bee Gees (a strategy recommended to all serious advocates of disco) – those regrettable outfits, the platform shoes, the flares, glitter and afro-wigs were, they inform us, just a part of the ‘mainstream surface’.
