First, let me say that I have been a B.B. King fan since I was a child. My father played jazz records when I was growing up. But, I was drawn to rock and roll, then later, to the blues. It didn't take long to learn that B.B. King was THE man where the blues were concerned. I had the good fortune to see B.B. Perform live twice. They are concerts I will never forget. I have read several biographies about Mr. King and I have always learned something. But, if you are a true B.B. King fan, this is the book for you. Reading this book made me feel that B.B. was talking directly to me. Since we had only recently lost him, this was really important to me. He tells you his inner-most thoughts and you feel as though you really
know the man, not just the musician. Although B.B. was the ultimate blues musician and a composer of great blues songs, I believe he would be the first to admit that he was not a professional writer. That credit must go to David Ritz. He did an amazing job. I am a serious reader, mostly of
autobiographies of musicians. This is, I believe, the best one I have ever read.

What a wonderful book about a wonderful singer/guitarist who has been giving us the blues for nearly sixty years now. This book is written in BB King's voice so it does feel like you are having a conversation with him, The tone is frank, the pace just right and the story absolutely intriguing. This talented performer's life has been drenched in the blues since his mother died while they were a family of plantation workers. The book takes you through BB's struggles a a street performer in his home town to a struggling act in Memphis where he felt like he would be lost in the hustle. BB is, as any fan would expect, a very humble fellow who is not afraid to acknowledge the role of luck wherever it has smiled on him. His humility, praise of other artistes and sheer hard work make for a life that is simple yet adventurous and very captivating. This is MUST reading for any BB fan and one of the most joyful aspects of artists' biographies is the fact that you learn about many other performers who in turn inspired the author. I felt the same way when I read Keith Richards' "Life" which led me to listen to (and inevitably fall in love with) Jimmy Reed's music. BB also mentions in great detail the singers/guitarists he admired and listens to even today. Go grab a copy today!

I read this book in 2000 and passed it on to a dear Vietnam Veteran Medic who passed-on himself about 5 years ago. The book is VERY open and honest - some parts of it about his girlfriends of the past are just plain riveting. Throughout the style and approach are as relaxed and laid-back in approach as much as BB's music is a pleasure to listen to. My ex wife met BB King at AFN Headquarters in the 1980's and did not know who he was, my mother sat beside him in an interview he conducted in the seventies, and throughout my life I have been listening to him as one of the kindest, gentlest souls I have ever known and look forward to the music for years to come. The book goes into his past from his start to his stardom in the 1990s. It is very detailed and I don't want to spoil any of it. To my friend, "Mr. Jones" I wish you RIP but I am glad we had a chance to share this wonderful boo. If you want to know about BB's background, this is where to get the info, straight from BB himself.

This is a terrific autobiography, compulsively readable, that really captures the essence of this gentle, thoughtful, hard-working man. David Ritz is a gifted collaborator, bringing his expert touch to the life of B.B. King, as he has to the stories of many other musicians.

I'm a blues musician, but everybody should read this. It's very entertaining, but it also says a lot about the Jim Crow era in the south. This is obviously him telling his own story complete with the imperfections he can an can't see. You have to read between the lines to see what he had to put up with when negotiating with the recording establishment. He did it just like Satchmo, with a big toothy smile for the white people and wink to people of color. I hope the time has come when you don't have to do that anymore. Mr. King, you taught me how to sing through my guitar, not shred like the rockers. Every time I do that bend I think of you.

loved it! david ritz really did an awesome job putting on paper bb's memories... all i have to say that when you are finished reading this book, damn you'll feel like you knew the man, you'll feel like you just have a couple of drinks with him and you were talking... just talking... well written, in a very honest-intimate sort of way
