Trumpets and Other High Brass is a series of five projected volumes, illustrated with instruments from the Utley Collection at the National Music Museum and other major collections. Volume 1, Instruments of the Single Harmonic Series, traces the development of high brass instruments without valves or keys from antiquity through the 20th-century Baroque trumpet revival.

A trumpet is a brass instrument commonly used in classical and jazz ensembles. The trumpet group ranges from the piccolo trumpet with the highest register in the brass family, to the bass trumpet, which is pitched one octave below the standard B-flat or C Trumpet. Trumpet-like instruments have historically been used as signaling devices in battle or hunting, with examples dating back to at least 1500 BC. They began to be used as musical instruments only in the late 14th or early 15th century.

The first volume in a planned five-volume history of the trumpet and its cousins. The series is inspired by the Joe R. and Joella F. Utley Collection of Brass Instruments at the National Music Museum at the University of South Dakota. This volume traces t
