Riva Castleman, an art historian and curator who built the world’s pre-eminent collection of modern and contemporary prints at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, died on Sept. 4 in Bridgewater, Conn. She was 84. Her niece, Kristen S. DeVoe, confirmed the death. Robert Rauschenberg, Larry Rivers, Jasper Johns, Helen Frankenthaler and many others worked there with printers and publishing artisans. Printmaking accelerated in the 1960s and ’70s, propelled by Pop artists including Andy Warhol, Edward Ruscha and Robert Indiana, who took up traditional printmaking forms like lithographs and engravings and added their own experimental variations.
