Paul Grushkin, who wrote the text for The Art of Classic Rock, is a widely regarded rock historian. He produced the immense Art of Rock, which became the standard work worldwide on rock posters, as well as co-writing The Art of Modern Rock. He is the co-author, with Joel Selvin, of Treasures of the Hard Rock Cafe, and with Cynthia Bassett and Jonas Grushkin, of Grateful Dead: The Official Book of the Dead Heads. Paul lives in Pinole, CA.

This large size edition of this book has been o.o.p. for a number of years. The only edition available until now was the much smaller edition-almost a pocket-size version. Just be aware that this new edition (printed in Oct. 2015) is a bit smaller than the 80's edition by about an inch or so. The original hardcover edition was approximately 13" X 11" X 1 3/4" (the last measurement including the hardcovers), and had 516 pages.

This new edition has the same number of pages as the earlier edition. Plus there's no dust jacket, but this new edition's cover is embossed which is pretty cool. I just thought if you were familiar with the original edition you might assume this newest edition is identical to that one. But when all is said and done the slightly smaller dimensions is a minor quibble. This new edition is well worth owning if you don't already have the original version. The printing is nicely done and the essays are informed. Grab this while it's still available if you're into rock poster history--and if you love rock and poster art from those years--when posters became a new art form (1950's and beyond), this is for you. For all of us who remember many of these posters it's a good trip back to another time. And for those who missed that whole era this is a nice signpost for a time in the late '60s/early '70s when music was really important, not just a life-style choice.

This book is not cheap, but it is the one to buy.

Please note that the vast majority of negative, one star reviews for this book has to do with the fact that there are two size versions of this book, one large, and one small. Almost all the negative reviews have to do with the purchaser getting the small version of this book, and do not have to do with the contents. (I got the larger version of this book.)

Also very good it "Classic Rock Posters," (2012), Mick Farren and Dennis Loren.
One to avoid is "Art of Modern Rock: The Poster Explosion." This book is not very good.

While this book certainly has a lot of concert posters featured in it, most are very small as they cram anywhere from 6 to 12 on some pages. I was hoping each poster would get its own page. I thought the book focused far too much on the San Francisco psychedelic posters and not nearly enough on other genres. If you want a bunch of tiny pictures of posters of shows by the Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, The Doors and Country Joe & the Fish, then this is the book for you. If you want to see full size posters of lots of classic rock bands, look elsewhere.

Really cool book. Has lots of album covers and posters. Also super heavy. My only complaint, and it's a small one, is that a lot of the book has many pictures per page. I was kind of hoping for a lot of full page art so you could really see the details. Still, I love it. If you like music art, pick this up.
