Although this book is full of stunning garments and gorgeously photographed with most of the clothing described well in great detail, I was very annoyed with its arrangement. I am the curator at a museum with a fine clothing collection (although nothing like the V&A) and I was particularly interested in the women's garments of the late 1860s to early 1880s (a favorite period) as well as any other women's outfits. Although as a curator and as someone who does exhibits I can understand the choice to present items according to a theme, I found this approach extremely frustrating. It would have been much better if the clothing had been presented in chronological order so that comparisons were easy to make and there was a natural progression as styles were changed bit by bit through tailoring, drapery and foundation garments.

Let me begin by saying that this is a beautiful book. It's coffee table sized, and printed on nice glossy pages that show off the wonderful photography. While the focus is on women's clothing, there are also several examples of men's fashion as well.

As the title would imply, the book includes clothing from the beginning to the end of the 19th century. However, if you are looking for examples of Regency clothing, as I was, you might be a little disappointed. While it does include some gorgeous Regency Era dresses, I only counted six that were actually featured in the whole book. The majority of it is concerned with Victorian styles. This is likely due to the relative scarcity of Regency gowns that actually remain in existence, but just be aware that this book is largely focused on the later fashions of the century.

On average, there are two pages dedicated to each piece of clothing, usually including a detailed photo, a front and back sketch of the entire garment, and a short (but not too short) description. One of my favorite pages discusses fabric patterns and trims. Besides dresses, there are also many accessories, men's jackets, shoes, outerwear, and even a few corsets. The details on some of these garments are absolutely stunning...it makes you wish people still put the same amount of artistry into clothing!

My one complaint is that while we are sometimes given both up close and full view photographs, most of the time there is only a simple line drawing of the full garment. I'm not sure why this decision was made, but when I go through the book I often find myself wishing that they had given us full view photographs of all the outfits, because they all deserve it.

In any case, this is a gorgeous, well-researched, and well-photographed book that will please all lovers of history, costume dramas, and fashion in general!

An absolutely beautiful book on 19th century clothing. It includes garments from the regency period of the early 1800's and through all the various eras. Both women's and men's garments are included although women's predominate. I do wish there had been more views of most of the outfits. Seeing the back, side and front as well as close up of details would have added much. I do realize the cost involved in so many more images would leave the book too expensive.

I love the fabric of the cover photo. I hope to find something similar I can use to make a Victorian bustle dress. This book has many ideas I am considering incorporating.

Love the minute details that are discussed and illustrated. Photos are great. Very informative and a book that should be anyone's library if they love 19th century literature or love to read novels written about that time. Thank you, Lucy Johnston. Would love to see another with many more pages of the 19th century fashions. Love this book!

I sat down intending only to flip through this book when it first arrived, but instead found myself enthralled with the richly detailed photographs and easy to read text. The large format photographs brings the fabrics up as close as if you had your nose on them, giving the reader unprecedented access to the clothes, their colour and texture almost as well as if you had the clothing article at hand. This is a wonderful reference book, full of fabulous imagery and informative copy and would be a wonderful addition to anyone's collection. I can see myself dipping in for a regular exploration of this collection of clothing from the nineteenth century, and also getting inspired to get back into costume making again.

This book is a visual feast for the eyes! I have gone through it over and over again, and each time I find something new! The coverage of the detail of each type of design is explicit, right down to the buttons and the thread. The book details things like the innovations in fashion, as well as common reviews of the time. In some cases, it also talks about the people behind the items that are featured, such as when they wore the items or their lifestyle. Beautifully done - exceptional photography!

Although the fashions in this book are of an era that doesn't really appeal to me in terms of their style - i.e. I would never copy one of these - it is fascinating to see the details and read about how these garments were constructed. The undergarments required for these garments were amazing - heavily boned corsets, steel hoops, etc. I'd like to see dozens more of these books!

Be very careful with this book. I was enchanted with the cover and thought it was a new book by Lucy Johnson....only to discover that I already had purchased the same book four years ago with a different cover. Lucky for me I browsed the other two options showing the different cover before purchasing this one, or I would have had to go through the trouble of returning it. It is an absolutely marvellous book with lots of photos of stunning creations. Very drool-worthy and inspiring. If you love fashion and don't have the different covered book, by all means, buy it!
