Excellent book, but the Securities Markets chapter (six) is slightly dated, through no fault of the authors. The ECNs were taking tremendous volume away from the established exchanges. The exchanges reacted by increasing their electronic trading and by buying the competition. Currently two big mergers have taken place which will change the shape of the market place. The NYSE has merged with Archipelago and Nasdaq has merged with Instinet. Exactly what will result from these mergers is unclear but radically change is uncertain.

I had Dr. Reilly 20 years ago, and the book I just finished was an older edition of this same text. The book covers a broad landscape in nearly 700 pages - from stock and bond concepts, to derivative securities, capital markets, warrants, alternative investments, mutual funds, fundamental and technical analysis, portfolio theory, and securities regulation. While Reilly doesn't cover any one of these subjects in excruciating detail, he does a fine job of touching on the critical elements to allow the reader enough insight to have a strong fundamental foundation in Investment Theory.

Not for the reader looking for some light reading, this is an upper level or graduate level finance textbook, designed for use in a collegiate setting. That doesn't diminsh it's value - and even the older editions will prove to be excellent references for years.

Investments by Frank Reilly. This college level text is a wonderful source of information for beginning investors as well as seasoned Registered Representatives. The material is presented in a fashion that is easily understood with several examples and stories to illustrate the theories and practices of all investments. Not only does this book cover the traditional topics of Equity and Debt investments it also covers the ins and outs of futures, commodities, derivatives, currency and precious metals. The first chapters lead off with an indepth explanation of the markets for each investment and how investments get to market. The techinical discussion of bringing an issue to market and the financing of corporate america is very helpful and enlightening. 13 years after graduating with a degree in Finance I still refer to this excellent work by Frank Reilly for everyday information.
