John Steele Gordon is the author of Hamilton's Blessing and The Scarlet Woman of Wall Street. He writes a popular column on American business history for American Heritage, contributes to the op-ed pages of The Wall Street Journal and USA Today, and can be heard on public radio's Marketplace. The book maintains a quick pace, touching on all of the major events, firms and people that have led to Wall Street's emergence as financier for the world. Yet despite its quick pace the treatment of each of these characters and defining moments is surprisingly deep.

In this gripping and informative book, John Steele Gordon tells history lovers, armchair investors, financiers, and day traders alike everything they need to know about Wall Street's wild ride to power. Wall Street began as the northern line of defense for a wilderness trading post, at a time when money was limited to gold, silver, and Indian wampum. Today, Wall Street is a metaphor for the global financial market, and money exists mostly on computer screens.

Gordon's "The Great Game" does so in convincing fashion. I really enjoyed reading this book. It traces the emergence of Wall Street as a world power from 1653 until 2000. In Chapter One, Gordon takes us back in time to the colony of Nieuw Amsterdam.
