The 1936 Olympic Games were a political festival staged to show the superiority of Nazi ideology. Leni Riefenstahl's film "Triumph des Willens" ("Triumph of the Will") celebrated Aryan manhood at the Nuremberg rally of 1934 and reflected Nazi racial policy and the exclusion of Jews from sports (described on pp. 57-64).

Today's calender is set in the minds of many people by the World Series, Wimbledon, the Super Bowl, and the World Cup, rather than by months and days. At the limits of their power, six strong young men approach the string along the finish line. The swiftest of them breaks the cord, detonating the release of joyous empathy among the thousands in the stadium.
