Golkis

I bought this for my third-year Chinese class. It's an enormous improvement over any book I've had up until this point. For me personally, it's a relief how few pictures and ridiculous illustrations there are. It's a simple, no non-sense book with challenging but educational readings and very thorough and helpful grammar sections containing lots of examples.

My favorite feature however, is that within each grammar section, the writers have in many cases provided an etymology of the grammar pattern, more often than not giving the original Classical Chinese root. This broadens your knowledge of the language immensely and makes the concepts easier to remember.

The audio CDs also deserves mention. They're clear and the speakers are talking at a very natural, non-exaggerated pace. Big plus!

The book's divided into four thematic sections, all of which give wonderful insights into Chinese history, but mostly things having to do with the present.

Bottom-line: this book is extremely pragmatic and I haven't a single complaint. It's even sized very conveniently and physically well put together!

Sloppy and unforgivably boring, with a uselessly spare grammar section and no original material from real Chinese newspapers or modern fiction. The exercises are confusing when they aren't infantile. Worse, the audio quality of the supplementary recordings is so poor that even native Chinese friends of mine have been unable to understand them. Do yourself and the Chinese language a favor by picking a different textbook.
