Sven Oskar Lindqvist (28 March 1932 – 14 May 2019) was a Swedish author of mostly non-fiction, whose works include Exterminate All the Brutes and A History of Bombing. Svenska Dagbladet described him as one of the most important authors in modern Swedish literature. Sven Lindqvist was born in Stockholm in 1932. Sven Lindqvist, Linda Haverty Rugg (Goodreads Author) (Translator) . A History of Bombing is a history of aerial bombardment-the most indiscriminate, politically punitive, and frankly terroristic style of fighting-in three hundred and ninety-nine vignettes. Lindqvist calls his book a labyrinth with twenty-two entrances and no exit, each entrance a narrative or an argument that concludes with a vision of humanity’s certain savagery, and probable doom. Follow the threads, he invites us, put together the horrifying puzzle, and, once you have seen my century, build one of your own from other pieces.

A daring literary and historical look at the ideologies of war and violence, by the author of "Exterminate All the Brutes". On November 1, 1911, over the North African oasis Tagiura, Lieutenant Giulio Cavotti leaned out of the cockpit of his primitive aircraft and dropped a Haasen hand grenade. Thus began one of the most devastating military tactics of the twentieth century: aerial bombing. With this point of entry, Sven Lindqvist, the author of the highly acclaimed "Exterminate All the Brutes," presents a cleverly constructed and innovative history.

Aerial bombing, one of the 20th century's most devastating military tactics, was initiated in 1911. This fascinating book is an overview & interrogation of the cultural & political dimensions -- & the devastating effects -- of war from above. Forming a labyrinth of events that illustrates the genocidal fantasies underlying so much conflict & the devastation wrought by aerial bombing, the book links the total war of World War II, the Korean War, & the Vietnam War with centuries-past colonial warfare. Mining such diverse topics as military history & strategy, the evolution of international law, turn-of-the-century science fiction, & the civilian experience during wartime, Lindqvist has produced a rich meditation on the past & the future of human conflict.
