Here you can read the story of the "Man who won WWI", Hiram Maxim. He was an American who invented, interestingly enough, the first self-loading magazine-fed weapon that did not require an input of energy from an outside source (like the Gatling). In other words, Maxim invented the automatic weapon, the machinegun. It might come as a bit of a shock for some to learn that the belt-fed machinegun was the forerunner to more innocuous weapons like the semi-automatic pistol and rifle (e.g. the M1 Garand) but Hiram Maxim did it first. You also learn that the original machinegunners of the first major machinegun war (WWI) were as skilled and effective as the artillery soldiers of the day, but after they were all killed (and they didn't last long) their role was taken by less skilled men who essentially hosed the countryside with as many bullets as they could lay hands on.

In WWI the massive casualty counts in concentrated individual battles (e.g. The Somme) was primarily due to the triumvirate of effective modern artillery, the machinegun, and "tanglefoot" (barbed wire) that slowed the soldiers down so the machinegunners could mow them down. Of the three, artillery had the highest body count but the machinegun was probably most feared, since it was right there at the front for all to see (as they were mowed down). Also, interestingly enough, every side used a machinegun designed by an American (the Maxim, the Vickers, the Lewis, etc.) except for the Americans themselves who were stuck with a miserable piece of French crap called the Chauchat that was as unreliable as it was ineffective. Until the appearance of the Browning Automatic Rifle, the Americans were denied the genius of their fellow American weapon designers and suffered as a consequence.

You also learn the startling fact that the first experiment of matching electric motor to Gatling rotary gun was conducted by the Navy in the late 1800s and they got startlingly effective fire rates but abandoned the effort as unnecessary and useless in that day and age. Yet now every single fighter aircraft has an electrically operated rotary cannon based on the Gatling model, and the most legendary of them all (the GAU-8) consumes something like 40% of the fuselage of the A-10 Thunderbolt/Warthog and is probably the single most effective multiple-fire gun ever developed. In full fire rate it generates as much backward thrust (recoil) as the jet engines of the A-10 generate forward thrust and so special airborne tactics must be used by pilots to avoid having the plane stall and crash during use of the gun.

This book is without doubt one of the most fascinating and useful books in the military history field. It's exhaustively documented in its sources, and will tell you things you never knew about automatic weapons, their use, and their effectiveness.

The M60 machinegun, a defective, unreliable abomination of a crew-served automatic weapon was the standard of the Vietnam era and beyond. Its only plus? A barrel chamber made of the GM-developed alloy Stellite, which allowed the weapon to be fired long past the point other weapons like it would have oveheated and needed a barrel change, short of barrel droop from heat causing the bullets to actually blast through the walls of he barrel. Besides, that, it was a poor copy of the German MG42/MG3.

A most fascinating and useful military history book. Read it and learn the significance of the autoloading weapon upon modern warfare. A must read.

This as a facinating read. It dispells myths and misconceptions
perpetrated by Hollywood and most histories. It gives the reader
insight into the development and tactical employment of a weapon that has and continues to change the modern world.

As a reader well versed in military history, the chapters relating to the competitive development of the Maxim
and Gatling were truly news to me, as was the impact of the Maxim on European colonialism. The DeBeer's diamond monopoly owes its existence to the Maxim gun...as a jingle went at the time.." In Africa, whatever happens, we have got, the Maxim gun and they have not."

The author's treatment of the evolution of tactical employment of the weapon is also very interesting and informative. Most modern non-military readers would not know what a machine gun barrage is, knowing only of it's use in direct fire mode. This is an area saturated by bullets that in practice is a lozenge shaped area. No aiming at individual targets is required. This technique was used as recently as the Falklands war where a section of medium machine guns expended hundreds of thousands of rounds in support of a single assault.

This is a must read for anyone interested 20th century military history.

The development of the machinegun and its effects on world politics, colonialization and warfare are incredibly well reviewed by Ford. This is not a field manual about how to service these weapons, but rather a look at how this (relatively) simple machine has changed warfare and politics and the world. I learned a tremendous amount about how this machine is used in combat and how those uses changed from WWI to Desert Storm. The technical review is adequate and the discussion of applications and deployment is phenomenal. The accounts of soldiers further illustrate the importance of this weapon to the modern battlefield. I read this book cover to cover in less than 5 days and plan to reread it soon. It is truly a must have for any serious military science or 20th century history library. Five stars don't rate high enough for this thoughtful review of Maxim's machine and its many children.

I would agree with the earlier review that this is not a technical manual, its about machine-guns and machine-gunners in action and as such it offers a easy to read account of this weapon and its place in military history. The author offers enought technical detail about the various weapons so you obtain a firm understanding of how they work. He then places the weapons, their inventors and the people who had to use the weapons into their place in history. This was a very easy and enjoyable book to read and some of the accounts of the 'machine-gunners' were excellent. Overall this is a well researched and well presented book with over 300 pages of text and numerous black & white photographs which provides the reader with an overview of the machine-gun in history.
