Fellow National Endowment of the Humanities, 1985-1986, American Council of Learned Societies, 1979-1980, Woodrow Wilson Foundation, 1966-1967, Wallace Stegner Foundation, 1965-1966; named to Nevada Writers Hall of Fame, 1998. A major concern of his work is with the lives of Basque Americans in the West. His writing about Native Americans ranges from the Shoshone of Nevada to the Maya of Chiapas, Mexico.

Frank Bergon has published eleven books focusing mainly on the history and environment of the American West, including Basques of his own heritage, most recently Two Buck Chuck & The Marlboro Man: The New Old West. He taught at Vassar for many years and lives in Oak Bluffs.

Frank Bergon (born 1943) is an American writer whose novels, essays, anthologies, and literary criticism focus primarily on the American West. Frank Bergon was born in Ely, Nevada, and grew up on a ranch in Madera County in California’s San Joaquin Valley.
