This report profiles the family characteristics and the level of involvement reported by the parents of 1988 eighth graders, using the base year survey and dropout data from the first follow-up. About 93 percent of the parents of the first year sample were interviewed to provide information about home life and family experiences. The parent component is not, however, a representative sample of eighth graders' parents.

Nationally representative, longitudinal study of 8th graders in 1988. Sample of students followed throughout secondary and postsecondary years. Surveys of students reporting on school, work, home experiences, educational resources and support, the role in education of parents and peers, neighborhood characteristics, educational and occupational aspirations, and other student perceptions. Additional topics included self-reports on smoking, alcohol and drug use and extracurricular activities. Student assessments in reading, social studies, mathematics, and science (8th, 10th, and 12th grades).
