For the first half, the most startling thing about it is how familiar it seems. A beautiful girl of mysterious origin; impossible quests assigned to suitors to prove their worth. I don't really have The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter is another book on my "classics" reading list. It's about an old bamboo cutter who finds a small child (read: alien) and raises her as his own. She grows up into a woman in the span of a few years and is unbelievably beautiful.
