I found The Tax Inspector very difficult to follow. Every character had their own complexities and did not get on with any other character in the book. This is the first Peter Carey bok I have read and was extremely disappointed. I found the disfunctionality of all the people in the book unbelievable.

I was captivated from start to finish. Granny Catchprice runs her family business (and her family) with. The Catchprice family with their dark secrets and hopeless aspirations, were endlessly fascinating. Other players became embroiled in the Catchprice chaos, and the story just picked up pace.
