The North West Shelf of Western Australia is an extensive oil and gas region off the North West Australia coast in the Pilbara region. It has a considerable number of oil and gas wells, pipelines, production areas and support facilities. As an area it is located in the Indian Ocean between North West Cape and Dampier. Dampier is usually considered the main administrative locality for the shelf.

The Northwest Shelf of Australia, comprising four major sedimentary basins (Carnarvon, offshore Canning, Browse, and Bonaparte, from south to north, respectively), is one of this continents important petroleum provinces (Purcell and Purcell, 1988a) with estimated undiscovered reserves of 1500 million barrels of oil and 20 trillion cubic feet of gas (Purcell and Purcell, 1988b).

Most of us probably are not aware of the huge programme of exploration and production on the broad shelf along the . The collection follows an earlier massive Purcell tome on the Canning Basin. And, in a sense it is a logical continuation of that work onto the offshore shelf.

Most of us probably are not aware of the huge programme of exploration and production on the broad shelf along the northwest coast of Australia. After an era of self-sufficiency, the country expects to be only 55 per cent self-sufficient by 1995 and perhaps only 35 per cent self-sufficient by the end of the century. I am frankly amazed that they could have produced a second great volume in such a short time (do they discuss it at breakfast?).

Eds), 1994, The Sedimentary Basins of Western Australia: Proceedings of Petroleum Exploration Society of Australia Symposium, Perth, 1994. The gas pipeline from the North West Shelf to the Kalgoorlie goldfields will traverse much of the State's rich mineral fields and may finally allow victory over what the historian Geoffrey Blainey called 'the tyranny of distance'. The reserves-to-annual production ratio for known natural gas resources in Western Australian basins is close to 150 years.

The North West Shelf Venture, situated in the north-west of Western Australia, is Australia's largest resource development project. Barrow Island is a 202 km2 (78 sq mi) island 50 kilometres (31 mi) northwest off the Pilbara coast of Western Australia. The island is the second largest in Western Australia after Dirk Hartog Island.
