George Cruikshank (27 September 1792 – 1 February 1878) was a British caricaturist and book illustrator, praised as the "modern Hogarth" during his life. His book illustrations for his friend Charles Dickens, and many other authors, reached an international audience. Cruikshank was born in London. His father, Isaac Cruikshank, was one of the leading caricaturists of the late 1790s and Cruikshank started his career as his father's apprentice and assistant.
George Cruikshank was an English caricaturist, illustrator, and etcher. He succeeded James Gillray as the most popular caricaturist of his day. Although George received money for drawings as early as 1804, it was not until some six years later that he tried his hand at the caricatures for which he was to become famous. Cruikshank illustrated more than 850 books and contributed to such publications as the Meteor, the Scourge, and the Satirist. In his later years, Cruikshank made many drawings depicting the evils of intemperance, such as The Drunkard's Children, The Bottle, and The Gin Trap.

As breadwinner, George Cruikshank began to sell his caricatures to a monthly magazine called The Scourge, which was fueled by the tumultuous domestic and international politics of the time. George did not align with a political party, so he was easily able to provide caricatures from a relatively impartial point of view for both radical and conservative parties.
