South West England is one of nine official regions of England. It is the largest in area, covering 9,200 square miles (23,800 km2), and consists of the counties of Bristol, Cornwall, Dorset, Devon, Gloucestershire, Somerset, and Wiltshire, as well as the Isles of Scilly. Five million people live in South West England. The region includes the West Country and much of the ancient kingdom of Wessex. The largest city is Bristol.

West Witton was originally known simply as Witton, and was mentioned (as Witun) in the Doomsday Book. By the late 12th century the village became known as West Witton to distinguish it from another Witton, now known as East.

The South West of England is well known for producing Cheddar cheese, named after Cheddar gorge, which is located close to Bristol, and for cider. Cornwall used to be famous for its tin mines (pictured below), which operated from Roman times until the last mine closed in 1998. There are stone and clay quarries in Devon and Cornwall.
