Making your own jumps - mary gordon-watson. When bad jumping is caused by bad riding, or by poor training, some helpful instruction can put it right. Jumping is fun. Most horses or ponies will jump small obstacles happily, but if a horse is unwilling to jump, or is too excited or nervous to jump safely, it ceases to be fun. But far too often it is uninviting, poorly designed and badly built fences which put horses off jumping – sometimes for ever. Even a well-built obstacle can be dangerous in the wrong place.

Sir John Watson Gordon PRSA RA (1788 – 1 June 1864) was a Scottish portrait painter and president of the Royal Scottish Academy. Gordon was born John Watson in Edinburgh, the eldest son of Captain Watson, . a cadet of the family of Watson of Overmains, in the county of Berwick. He was educated specifically to prepare him for enrolling in the Royal Engineers. He entered as a student in the government school of design, under the management of the Board of Manufactures.
