Detlev Claussen follows Theodor Wiesengrund Adorno (1903–1969) from his privileged life as a beloved prodigy to his intellectual coming of age in Weimar Germany and Vienna; from his exile during the Nazi years, first to England, then to the United States, to his emergence as the Adorno we know now in the perhaps not-so-unlikely setting of Los Angeles. There in 1943 with his collaborator Max Horkheimer, Adorno developed critical theory, whose key insight-that to be entertained is to give one’s consent-helped define the intellectual landscape of the twentieth century.

He was the first university teacher for neurotology to be appointed in Germany. Claussen studied medicine at the universities of Bonn and Hamburg, where he took his German medical state exam and the United States Medical Licensing Examination.

Detlev Claussen was born in Hamburg in 1948. Between 1966 and 1971 he studied sociology, philosophy, political science and German literature at the University of Frankfurt. In 2011 he retired from his position as professor of social theory, cultural sociology and the sociology of science at the University of Hanover, becoming professor emeritus. Politische Essays, Wassmann 1988; „Aspekte der Alltagsreligion, Verlag Neue Kritik 2000, „Was heißt Rassismus?, Wissenschaftliche Buchgesellschaft, Darmstadt 1994; „Theodor W. Adorno – ein letztes Genie, S. Fischer 2003; „Béla Guttmann – Weltgeschichte des Fußballs in einer Person, Berenberg 2006.
